First off thanks to all of you for some very good info. I read these posts every chance I get. Enough BS Here's my problem. Bot truck '02 w/53,000 miles on it in December, now has 8ok. So you know she don't sit still! Left it sit for two days, driving home on turnpike developed a surge/buck at 70mph cruise. Kicked it down ran fine. Replaced fuel and air filters. Has surge/ buck at about 1250 rpm at steady speeds. If I accelerate sligtly or kick of the O.D. problem goes away. Runs great at any other RPM. even picked up about 25 more miles to the tank. I was thinkin plugs, but it really doesn't act up at any other RPM. no MIL"s Any suggestions?
a cop (coil on plug) or a vacum leak, chk the common pcv elbow cracking problem.
It may throw a code when it gets bad enough.
You could see if its posting misfire's within the pcm. That won't throw a code till it gets really bad.
you could chk the plugs for a loose one or if the hole is full of water also

See if the local Autozone or big-brand-name parts shop can read the misfire counters. They do it for free, but it depends on whether they have the right scanner (and the right person) that can read the misfire counters.
Rich is dead on...
I'd clean the MAF too, a little dirt will make it not sense small amounts of air like when cruising.
Thanks guys! I think Rich is probably correct. The miss got worse this morning on the drive to work (110 miles). After work I bought a set of plugs. Luckly I didn't have any problems putting them in. I have an older Lincoln and the passinger side's always the hardest! Plugs were tight w/ no carbon traces or any fowling. But when I removed the COP on the pass rear (hardest) the boot came off. looked at inside coil of wire and it looked ok, installed boot and made sure it was on the plug. However the miss got even worse. Still no light! The parts stores and garages were closed by then. First thing in the AM this baby's getting scoped somewhere, somehow. And I bet it's the cop that came apart. By the way does Ford still # the pass bank 1-5 and the driver's side 6-10 ? Thanks again for the help, I'll let you know what I find!
Went to the zone. codes for #5 #4 #6 #9 misfire. Replaced all the boots. (I know better than to skip this, but was being cheap) STill missing. Trip two to the zone: #5 #4 #6 misfiring (yes I erased the codes) Replaced all 3 COPs. Ran better. Took long trip (380 miles) As long as RPM is over 2k Runs great. Full Throttle Great. Steady cruise at 1500 rpm- bucks like bronco! Tried lower gear. slower speed still at 1500-2000rpm bucks! Idle in neutral ok- idle in gear rough intermittently. Took baterry cable off overnite. Drove it today still same. Trip 3 to zone tried to buy scanner that will take snapshot on road, have to order. checked for codes, none present. TPS Sensor, EGR valve maybe? I'm thinking whatever controls spark/fuel at this speed may be malfunctioning ANY IDEAS? IS THIS DAMN THING POSESSED? DO I NEED AN EXORCTST? HELP!!!!!!!!!!
did you check for vac leaks ? sure sounds like you should be looking at those hoses and spraying the intake to head gaskets to see if they have gone bad or losened up.
MAF is clean, talked w/ one of my Ford mech. that used to work w/me concurs vac leak. may take it to Ford dealear that I used to work for. I'm tired of chasing my tail!
I haven't ran into it on a V10 but quite often on other engines, EGR problems will show up at 1500-2000 rpm. They can give you a lean surge.
Try plugging the vacuum hose to the EGR valve and see what it runs like. If doing that makes a difference then you could have a bad DPFE causing the PCM to open up the EGR more that it should be at that rpm.
If there's a dumb S**t of the month award, I own it!!!!!! My old mech. mentioned everything you fellows did, except he said Ford upgraded those plugs w/ a new #. The new # is AGSF22WM. I went to the dealer first thing this morning and bought a set. I inspected every plug I removed and didn"t see anything obvious. The I used an old trick my dad taught me. I wiped some dirt on my fingers and the wiped the tops of the old plugs. Wow! found two that were cracked in the identical place! I don't know if I cracked them on install, or they came cracked. Betcha I don't make that same mistake again!! [B][I][U]Thanks guys for all the help! You're a great bunch of guys!
