1998 V10 Coil On Plug Failure -Again
I have a Ford 1998 Club Wagon V10 (3.73 rear end) for pulling a 30 ft., 6000 lb travel trailer. It pulled fantastically until 63,000 miles. A loss of pulling power, some ping, & rapid temperature gauge rise going up hills occurred. My local dealer replaced the # 2 plug & COP. I went back the next day with the same problem & he replaced the rest of the plugs & the # 9 COP ($133 for each COP).
Now at just over 69,000 miles I have the same problems (loss of pulling power, some ping, & rapid temperature gauge rise going up hills). The loss of power seems to be really hard to notice until you add the trailer. Then you get the temperature rise & ping.
I am thinking that I will be replacing 1 or 2 COPs again & all 8 eventually. Does it make sense to buy the Waekon (WAE76560) Coil On Plug (COP) Ignition Quick Probe at $69 & a couple of COPs at $60 each? I can put the COPs on OK; it is just really tight in there on a van. I really don't want to go back to the dealer & spend another $ 133 each when there are 8 that have not been replaced.
Thanks.

You have all the symptoms of a classic lean condition.
check all your vac hoses for cracks esp. the L shaped one from the pcv to intake manifold . make sure every thing is tight that has a hose clamp on it. remove the mass air senser and spray it clean with some brake cleaner. try not to touch it just spray it clean and let it dry off.
if you still think it s a cop . try moveing the known good one around to the others first.
if one is bad you know it.
again as art said these motors and what many of us have found the v10 hates a dirty fuel filter and it shows in performace. while my is a 05 check out my gallery and see what came out of the filter at 20k
good luck keep asking as you go along we will help as best as we can

Charlie: My COP is a one piece unit with the boot attached (DG-508), at least the 2 old ones are. I can get to 5 of them pretty easy but the other 5 are a real pain to get to. Sure hope I don't have to move them around. I will check the vacuum hose as you suggest & get a book to find where the mass air sensor is. Thanks.
I am headed to IN from MD tomorrow (not taking the van) but should back next Wednesday to work on it.
You need anti-tamper TORX bits, the ones with the hole in the center. Use brake cleaner, and spray down the two filaments liberally. If they are still somewhat dirty on one side, a q-tip (GENTLY) can be used to move the dirt and then spray it again.
At 22K miles, my V10's MAF was dirty on one side, and made a noticable difference in acceleration and shift quality.
I am off to buy the tool now.
Charlie: You are right about that boot on the COP, I just had to pull a little harder.

.Lessons learned;
1. next time change fuel filter before 39,000 miles
2. fill fuel filter before installing (it takes a while for the fuel pump to pump it full plus the line out to the engine)
Art & Charlie, thanks much for you help.

clogged fuel filters can and do lead to loss of of power . esp with this stuff they now call gas that lossens up all the crud built up in the fuel tanks over time. mine made 20k before i felt the drop off in power . just as a example and with the correct tools they are not hard and with the newer ones no tools needed they have a push botton fast change fitting on them noted with a blue tab on the filter fitting

. Ford replaced the MAS for a paltry $493 but it is still getting hot after climbing a couple of hills (about 15 miles out & accelerating to maintain speed). I did replace the thermostat at 63,000 (70,000 now). Do you think maybe I got a bad one?

yikes!!!!
Well you should do a fuel pressure test while pulling the load.
But also are you loosing coolant from the bottle?
this also has the classic look of a slight head gasket situation

But Art they usually fail on all the time (frozen bearings)

Fluid coupling loosing fluid, it'll spin even easier. Is the fan greasy?
Did he clean out all the bugs and leaves from the A/C condensor in front of the radiator?
