Hey guys. My buddies 94 explorer has had starting problems in the past. One time I tried to help him get it started and I noticed a flashing red light on his dash. It was making a clicking sound from the dash. I figuired the alarm some how got enabled thus knocking out the ignition system. He assured me that the vehichle does not have an alarm. He had bought the explorer recently and did not recieve a remote control for the alarm. I think the alarm is on. Can the system be disabled ? How about getting a new remote for the alarm ? He has been replacing parts like crazy, and yet it still doesnt start with the key. Sometimes it will start by shorting the starter relay with a screwdriver. I went on to tell him about my 1997 f150. Took out the battery, replaced it, and then the truck woulnt start. Same flashing red light, same clicking noise from dash. I found the alarm remote, disarmed it, and the truck stated right away. Alarm issue here ?
If you're saying it wont even crank, try this: remove the wire with the rubber boot from the starter relay connect a voltmeter to it & turn the key to start
Do you get 12 volts?
Edit if this was mine & it does have an alarm, i'd rip it out & toss it in the trash.
Thanks 87 XLT. Turns out it did have an alarm installed. There was a mickey moused kill switch for the alarm that was installed under the dash. At some point in time the wire that connected the switch to the alarm system came appart. I hooked it back up again, and voila, the truck fired right up with the key, problem solved. Now to disable that darn alarm !
Yeah I think those *&^%$ alarms cause more problems for their owners than they do for car thiefs.
It's a shame that so much electronic GARBAGE-like Alarms, ABS brakes, traction control, stability control, auto climate control- is becoming standard equipment on the newer vehicles. I dont want any of it.
Right on Brother. You are preaching to the Choir ! I hate all that electronic garbage. Now my buddy says the flex capacitor went out. What the heck is that ? JK
Yeah, i guess I was a little slow on the uptake on that "Flex/flux capacitor." business.
Tell your friend that anytime the flex/flux capacitor is suspect, the high speed muffler bearings should be imediately inspected for proper operation. LOL
