i have a 98 ford explorer xlt and my autohead lights dont work anymore like they use too. now i have posted on here about them and i got a reply sayin there is a relay box by the radiator and i checked the relays for corrosion and their fine. anyone had this problem? i called ford but of course they dont know squat till i bring it in. well thanks for your help
Yes, thats normal and proves the lighting module is working properly. That indicates the problem is between the mirror head and the light relay. Make sure the plug in the back of the mirror is plugged in tight. Next, what indicator lights are on at the mirror? Did someone accidently push the switch that turns the auto light feature off? When it is dark out and the key on, is the little white light on the right side of the mirror on?
i check the plug and everything fine there is no button just that slide switch for the auto lamp. i took the plug out and put it back in just have to wait till tonight and see if it works. thanks
My 97 has an auto dimmer button which lights when key is on and it is activated -- a manual dim button that lights when activated -- an autolamp switch that lights when you depress it -- and a little white light on the far right that lights when the headlights are supposed to be on.
Are there any indicator lights at all on yours and if so are they lighting? This would indicate that the mirror is getting power.
There are five wires on my mirror, they pin out like this:
Red/Yellow - 12V+ when ignition is on
Light Green/Yellow - 12V+ continuous
Black - ground
Black/Pink - 12v+ from reverse lights (turns off dimming feature while in reverse)
White/Purple (sometimes White/Blue) - goes to ground when the headlights should be on
Simple tests -
do the headlights flash when you press the "Panic" button on your key fob - no? problem is in lighting modual not autolamps, stop here - yes? go to #2
is light green/yellow wire hot - no? check fuse #9 - yes? go to #3
is red/yellow hot with the key on - no? check fuse #11 - yes? go to #4
check between black and any grounded point on vehicle with an ohmmeter - more than 10Ω repair ground connection - less than 10Ω go to #5
using a jumper wire - jump between white/purple and black wires on plug - lights come on? mirror is bad, replace - lights don't come on, open white/purple wire in vehicle, rerun wire and reconnect.
