I bought a new ACCEL Coil, ACCEL Plugs, ACCEL wires, and a Mallory distributor(part number 2755101). Upon installing everything, the new distributor will not work. My truck cranks/turns over, but will not fire/start. When I put the old distributor back on, everything works perfect. I have been working on this for about 5 hours, and can't determine why the new dist. wont work. Right now, I have the new coil and the old dist... and it runs like new.
The new dist. is a dual points system, and my old one is a single point. I have been told, that shouldn't be an issue... is this correct?
The box says "DIST, FORD V8 289 62-80 DP VA", but I have a 302. Did Mr. Gasket send me the wrong dist. (since it says it is for a 289)? If so, I will just send the dist. back and get the correct one (302).
My main question is, where do I put the primary wire from the dist. to the coil? The new dist. didn't come with any extra wire or anything. I had to make my own wire, and attach it to where I THINK is should go. However, I am thinking that I didn't hook it up right. Because the engine wont run with the new distributor.
I want to get this truck running, with the NEW dist., today. PLEASE, someone answer me today!
Sounds like you could have a 180º out issue if you have the wiring correct. I think a ballast may be required in there, you didn't mention it.
BTW, We try to help with all posters questions, but this is not a post on demand, gimme an answer now forum. You posted on a sunday afternoon when less readers are likely to be online. Always give 24 hrs to get an answer.
He said he had the new coil and old dizzy in and it was running fine so 180 off was kinda ruled out if it is put back at TDC,lined up with the #1 and old taken out and new dropped in . Should just be a simple fixing of the wires, and maybe adding a ballist resistor like John stated, I had to run one. I just used the diagram I posted along with some advice off here https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...d.php?t=488220 and mine fired up on the 1st crank.
I've just assumed this is not a tech line but just a bunch of ppl trying to help one another out and common knowledge that your post may not be responded to RIGHT when you need it, but usually in a timely manner. That beeing said typing in a little desperation in the end to let ppl know you really want to get your rig back on it's feet is just a shared human emotion between us truck guys and not a demand IMHO.

The coils - post grounds thru the points. So the dist lead goes to negitive. Did you check to see that the points open to the gap they are supposed to? Run a
clean piece of match book cover or something like that thru them to clean off
any oxides that may insulate them from makeing a circuit to the grounded point.
Finally there is the condenser, it may be bad. When you have the dist installed
with both sets of points closed put the match cover between one of the sets of points and manually open the other. On opening you should get a spark from the
center coil wire. I you don't try substituting your old condenser. That is about allI can think of, except make sure the distributor plate and housing are grounded.
I appreciate all of y'all's help! I still haven't been able to get the new distributor to work. I called the place I bought it from, Mr. Gasket, and the guy is trying to help me as much as he can (without actually being here to do it for me). I feel that it isn't starting, because of a very simple wiring issue. The directions that came with the Mallory dist., were terrible (I thought at least). Also, since an additional primary wire wasn't included, I had/have no idea where to run it from the coil to the dist. THAT is where I am messing up. If I can figure out where to attach the primary wire, I believe that she will start right up.
Oh, and I wasn't trying to post a "post on demand" thread. I was simply trying to show my urgency in the subject title and paragraph. I thought everything would be simple to install, and when it didn't start, I was getting irritated (not at anyone on here obviously). I apologize if I offended anyone.
So, it seems that maybe the wire from the coil to dizzy is in the wrong place on the dizzy?
Usually it hooks to a stud sticking out the side of dizzy. Pull the cap off the dizzy and make sure the wire is on the right stud. The stud on the inside will be hooked to the wires going to the points. If you hooked the wire on the opposite side, then it's permanently hooked to ground and NOT thru the points.
The proper stud is the one with plastic insulators around it so as not to touch the body of dizzy. This is the place that the condensor also hooks too!
If the old unit works fine, then slipping the new dizzy in should not create any issues. Unless, like mentioned, either 180 degrees out or the plug wires are going in the wrong direction around cap?
The 289 and 302 are the same engine family and that's not a problem.
