Question sterering ?'s

Ihave recently statred converting my 66 f250 to power steering. Ihave robbed the parts off of a donor 73 1/2 ton. My question is, will the steering colum from the donor truck be short enough or should i cut the orginal one. I do have a c6 with colum shift in it now. I have dine a forum search didnt really answer the question i had. The steering box bolted right on that was nice. thanks for the help

Made the upgrade on 65 F100 with floor shift and only had to shorten the steering shaft on original. Also, slight alteration at firewall because angle of steering box and column slightly off. Intend to make same upgrade on other 65 w/ column shift and from what I have read, the donor column should work. Hope to find out soon, if time permits. Another member posted thread within last few days indicating he made the upgrade using donor column and experiencing problems shifting. May be some minor linkage adjustment, perhaps members who have made the upgrade used later model column can provide info.

The column is a direct bolt up fit. There is a difference in the cuff that fits the bottom of the dash. You can remove the one from the 66 or use longer bolts in 73.

I think sometimes that I would like a shorter column, I would like the wheel to be about 3" further away. I am concidering do it when I install my tilt column.

I have a later model column intend to install at later date. It has a grey connector as you described with a red keeper. Using a pair of needle nose pliers or small screw driver you can remove the keeper and there is a plastic lever/retainer that releases the pin and will come out from the back. The pins may be different than the original, not sure. If not may consider splicing the connector from the original column harness. Removing the pins on original column, not sure you will need to, requires a pair of tweezers, or small needle nose pliers. If you look at the original connector with the pins facing you, there is a lever inside to connector when pinched or moved toward the center releases the pin and can be pulled out from the back. If you look at the original connector it may make sense, not doing too well trying to describe. May want to check with local auto supply store to see if they carry the pins before splicing. Had to replace the connectors on my 65 column harness and found local Napa auto supply carried them, or something simular. Suggest taking one with you if should consider.

I used butt connectors, so I could unplug it again if needed. Used the trial and error method and had it complete in about an hour. I bypassed the 4way switch in the column because I wanted to retain the one in the dash.

I found this
Written by George Selby:

67-72 steering column pin out.

Big Connector:

White/Blue stripe: Right Front Turn Signal/Indicator on Instrument Panel Green/White Stripe: Left Front Turn Signal/Indicator on Instrument
Panel

Blue/Yellow stripe: Ground When horn Depressed

Red/Black Stripe: Brake Pedal Switch (12 VDC when brake pedal is depressed.

Blue: Turn Signal Flasher (Provides 12 volts to Turn Signals) Little Connector:

Green: Right Rear Turn Signal/Stop Lamp

Yellow: Left Rear Turn Signal/Stop Lamp

Connect the following color wires together.

White/Blue Stripe on steering column: Connect to White/Blue Stripe on big connector Green/White Stripe on steering column: Connect to
Green/White Stripe on big connector Black/Red Stripe on steering column: Connect to Red/Black Stripe on big connector Blue on steering
column: Connect to Blue on big connector Yellow/Black Stripe on steering column: Connect to Green on little connector Light Green on
steering column: Connect to Yellow on little connector

Hope it helps
