Is the rubber cement really necessary when installing the windshield??? Is it for sealing purposes or for installation ease??? I will use the soap solution to help the install. Thanx for any help !! BTW truck is garage kept if that matters?
Apparently, the rubber cement isn't necessary. I just removed the windshield from my 56 and it had no cement. It's been in there for at least 10 years and seen a lot of rain with no problems.
i recently installed a new windshield in my 56 and didn't use cement. It has sat out in the rain a couple times since then and no leaks. soap and water on the gasket definitely makes installation easier
The pro shops use linseed oil and it takes all of 20 seconds to rope it in and seat real good. No sealers, just use a new gasket with each new windshield.
I installed a new windshield in my 51F1 without any sealer and it leaked in the lower corners when moving, it was ok when sitting. I have sense put the glass sealer from Napa around it and it's ok now.
If it is a new gasket you don't need sealer. I had my windshield installed by the place I bought it from and the guy who installed it told me that the gasket I had (bought from Mid-Fifty) was a "self-sealing" type of gasket. However, he said if it leaked, it would need sealed. My truck only sees sunny days, so I don't know if it will leak or not
