Excellent information. I'll be taking the carb apart soon then, hopefully this week.

Thanks again!

i was thinking there might be water stuck in the float bowl also...it would be a hassle to take the whole tank off and drain it, id go with the other guys and pull that carb apart..most times if your careful you wont break the gaskets...carb cleaner and an airgun should do wonders...just watch out for that carb cleaner, it easily shoots right back out that carb and right in your eye...burns like a s.o.b. too

Yeah, that's one I found out the hard way!

(You'd think I'd have learned the first time I did it!)

Safety glasses are your friend with that stuff!

That's the way I test the strength of various carb cleaners. The more they burn my eyes, the stronger they must be... :-)

If I have time, I'm going to try to work on it in a little bit. I'll let you know what I found.

Great news. I was able to find on ebay a NEW, in box, identical carburetor for only $150. That's half the price of a rebuild! You gotta love ebay. I should get the carb by Friday, and I'll let you know how it goes.

Now, do you think it's worthwhile to drain my fuel tank? I didn't find any water residue in the oil or transmission, but I don't want to take a chance at damaging a new carburetor either.

What do you think?

I think I would pump out a sample of the fuel into a clean, clear plastic bottle and let it settle for a bit, then you can visually inspect for water and other impurities. Depending on what you find, you can then decide if you want to drop the tank to clean it or not.

i agree with tigerdan....just clean the end of the hose that goes from the fuel pump to the carb, put in in a clear bottle and crank the motor over a little, that will show you if there is any gunk after the fuel pump, if so you can then test it at just the tank that way if there is gunk in there you can easily pin-point where it is in your fuel system

droppin the tank for no reason could be a pain, especially if you break a strap and have to get new ones :-/

Thanks much, guys. Interestingly, sometimes I repair small engines (read lawnmowers). This evening, I had two guys contact me who are neighbors. They both had similar symptoms, but with two different mowers. Turns out that they'd both been fueled at one point by a third neighbor. Both mowers had water in the carbs! I had to drain the tanks, of course, and then both float bowls.

I'll let you know what I find out after the new carb comes.

I finally installed that new in box carburetor this evening. The truck runs literally like new! I couldn't be more pleased.

Thanks so much for your help!
