Turbo, thanks for that heads-up ... speaking of which ... what is the preferred round inside the X for running power, rca, cables etc ... and what do I have to pull apart to make for reasonable access ...

I think he might be thinking of the MTX thunderform that is offered for the Navigator/Expedition that uses a 10" sub. Like this one:
http://cgi.ebay.com/MTX-Audio-Thunde...QQcmdZViewItem

The main problem there is that it fires to the side. It might be out of the way but you won't get but MAYBE half the output of the speaker. Its pretty amazing what a difference it makes when you turn your sub sideways and it doesn't reflect off the rear door. That is my experience anyway...

Post-man,
Its really not hard. Thats one of the best things about american made interiors. They are SO easy to take apart. I ran mine down the drivers side along with my sirius antenna lead. Just take your time and make sure to try and not break any of the plastic pins or clips and you should be able to figure it out.

Another note to push you to changing out your deck. I installed my amp and 4 subs from my Bronco (Aftermarket head unit) into my X and used speaker leads to create RCAs. The local stereo shop let me try all 3 kinds that he sold without purchasing. One was $80. None created a signal half what the last deck put out. The stereo shop owner even said I would not be happy seeing what I was installing, the old quality Orion HCCA stuff before the takeover. I changed out the deck and was happy again. I was amazed that nothing in the line out converter arena had improved in the last few years. By now, we should be able to purchase a LOC with a signal comparable to that of an aftermarket deck. Then we had a baby and I downsized the speakers for my son's ears and stroller and stuff. 4 Subs take up alot of space, even when you have an X.
Good luck

Now I need to supplement this with some tight bass and am not looking to begin a D-I-Y project building enclosures etc. .. wondering if anyone has used any of the prefab premade enclosures (and what speakers) and where have you mounted them.

I'm not too jazzed about putting a box behind the 2nd and 3rd seats, so that pretty much leaves me with the rear compartment ..and I can handle that as long as I don't use too much space ..

I was on the SD/HD forum and some guys were praising the Deathbox by Decware ... seems a little clunky though 14x14x20 ...
I was looking at those speakers for my 99' f350.All my stock speakers are partially blown. How do they sound compared to the stock speakers?Im keeping my stock head unit,Its 15 watts a channel, and i think the factory head units are much easier to operate than the tiny little buttons on the aftermarket ones.Ive had excursions, and expeditions.I think most of ford stereos sound sub par.I think its the speakers that suck though.I hope im right.

Big ... I think Bucky turned me on the to Pioneers TSA 6881 R and I like them .. nicer high end .. cleaner bass .. although I seemed to lose a little of the bottom end .. but worth the trade-off for the cleaner sound .. I will be supplimenting this with a powered subwoofer from Infinity ... I just ordered the Infinity Basslink 10" Selfpowered sub ... I'm just looking to supplement and round out the sound and am giving this a shot since I have seem some positive reviews .. I'll give it a shot and post here w/results .. if its NG .. it goes back ...

I have my stock head unit and for the sound is fine for me .. and I do consider myself to be a critical listener .. granted no comparison to my Krell amp for the home 2 channel system in the listening room .. but good decent music ... I recommend the Pioneers .. easy install .. especially if you get the Ford factory speaker connections from Installer.Com .. plugs right into the car side and then on to the speaker side ... you can do all 4 speakers in 30 mins ...easily .. door panels have 2 screws .. 1 under power window switch .. other behind the door reflector .. slide door panel up and off .. 4 screws .. OEM connector .. viola .. you are ready to reassemble the door panel and listen away ... good luck

The powered sub arrived today ... pretty snappy .. 2 day turnaround ... now I have to tap into the rear speaker lines in order to drive the sub ... yes it does handle speaker inputs ... I re-read Bucky's procedure in the "Speaker Size" thread on removing the rear panels ... which sounds like a pain in the **** ... any other thoughts on tapping into the L/R speaker leads .. yes the sub is going ALLL the way in the back ... seems like the most logical place ..

Big, the part number on the package (seems like the installer.com part #) is 72-5600 and it is a pair of the "Ford Speaker Adapters" you will need 2 pair for 4 speakers .. shipping is the same .. parts are made by Metra .. their website is www.metraonline.com .. good luck

IGOTONEFORYA, I see that someone else knows good stuff too. i have the old stuff back from like 1994. i have the red 225HCCA, 250HCCA, 425HCCA. they are the ones without the crossover, except the 425...thats REAL power. i had the 250HCCA running my 2-15" orion dvc subs dropped to 1/4 ohm. and the 225 running all of my mids and highs also at 1/4 ohm. i actually broke my back window in my 92 mustang. i since took it all out and have it all in my 97 dodge ram 2500 reg cab. YEAH< REALLY LOUD>>>>

postman...I'm really getting into the idea of doing what you have. I put a system in my former Bronco and it did rock with subs, etc.

I am wondering where to place the powered sub. I'd hate to lose the space in the back.

Matt, I haven't yet installed the powered sub (need to find couple of hours this week) but the plan is to put it ALL the way in the back with the ability to quick disconnect if necessary .. I use that space all the time as well for kids Lacrosse gear, saddles, etc but I think they can coexist ... have to work on getting to the 3rd row speakers first .. Fuzzleak and Bucky put the instructs out there in a thread called "Changing the stock speakers" ... the plan is to tap into the L/R 3rd row speaks to drive the speaker level inputs on the Infinity Basslink ...

I still have to reiterate that I do like the sound of my 04 stock stereo with the new Kenwoods ... and w/a little more bass it should be more than adequate for me

post-man…I’m with you when it comes to not wanting to pull the headunit. I really like the features and such.

I want to try the Pioneers (?) that you did, and the Basslink intrigues me. I’m going to look into seeing where I could install this, but I cannot give up much space. I play in a band and often need to take a few of us and a few instruments. If I could find a place to store that darned 3rd seat that I never use…I’d be in business. Hmm.

I’m thinking that the wires for the third row speakers may be under one of the sill plates or carpet. They have to be routed somewhere before they get to the speakers themselves. This way, you would not have to pull the rear panels out. I’ll look into that too.

**EDIT*** I do still have the 8" power Bazooka and 8" slave units I took from the Bronco...these may mound nicely on the floor between the 2nd and 3rd seats. Hmm.
