i am installing a mustang cj toploader in a 1965 f100 and the mr gasket ratchet shifter i have won't work without cutting the floor and using bucket seats. i am looking for ideas and solutions. thanks. jim
Does your truck have a "Factory" floor shift hole in the floor?
What year Mustang did the transmission come from?
Do you have the shifter and shift rods that were on the transmission when it was in the Mustang?
There are some options to "re-cutting" the floor, depending on answers to the above questions.
the transmission came from a 69 428cj mustang with the short tail shaft. bigin bigout toploader. i don't have the mustang linkage. the transmission is in A1 condition and came with mr gasket ratchet shifter with reverse lockout etc. excellent linkage but the shifter sets to far back. thanks. jim.
So, it sounds like you have the tranny, shifter, shift rods, etc. and you just need to move the shifter forward to fit the existing hole in the floor of the pick-up. You may also need a longer shifter handle. Two options that I am aware of are: 1. Change the transmission tailshaft housing to one that is identical except that the mounting holes are farther forward. I believe that the tailshaft housing from a mid 60s Falcon will work for this. I will look at some of my transmissions and see if I can get a number. 2. Install an adapter plate that mounts to the original holes and allows the shifter to be mounted farther forward. These should be available. I think that I have one, but I would need for you to do some measuring and tell me how far forward the shifter needs to be moved in order to be sure that it would work. The shifter rods should have enough adjustment on them for you to move the shifter forward and use the same rods. Also look at you tailshaft and see if it has the bosses(sp) farther forward. Some had them, but they were not drilled and tapped.
I'm sorry but there is no way that will work. You just aren't getting the shifter in the original 4 speed hole, and even if you did you aren't going to be able to reach the shifter, I mean come on the shifter is going to be sitting on the reverse lever to get it in the original 4 speed hole. Your best bet is a sawzall, a floor pan from an automatic so you can cut the hole you need out of it and some metal to make a new shifter arm from By the way I had to switch to 80 something toyota bucket seats and the shifter comes through in the perfect spot in my opinion.
if the current linkage is used the floor itself will have to be cut, not just the floor pan. the shifter sets farther back than the floor pan. a couple of inches too far back. i may just go ahead and cut the floor and use mustang buckets and my recently found ranger brackets. the previous owner told me that with the current linkage that he never missed a shift so i really want to use what i have. thanks for the help. jim.
You said a Mr. Gasket Rachet shift, is that a V-Gate2 your refering to? it has 1-2 on one pull back and 3-4th on the next no side shifting or anything and you have to pull up the lever to shift back to the 1-2 gate. I run one of those in my truck now and love it, it's a blast aside from when you have to pull out and back up quick, hard to get reverse on mine.
i think so. i have had the transmission and linkage for several years waiting for the right project. i have never used it but the shifter has 3 levers with the back one being a whizzo deal that looks like a set of brass knuckles. i'm guessing that is the reverse lockout. the clutch linkage is going to require tuning up as the cj clutch arm hits the headers and the stock clutch rod has a smaller end on it than is needed for cj clutch arm. thanks. jim.
Of course, it is your choice. If you want to use that specific shifter, then you have to deal with the problems associated with that. I thought that you just wanted a shifter that would work without having to cut the floor. Anyway, good luck with it. I hope you get it worked out like you want it.
first, you said you have a toploader from a Mustang, but you said it had a long tailshfat. Well , maybe long compared to a Truck trans, but the Mustangs got the short version of the toploader. I have a 428 with a toploader from a 67 Mustang in my 69 F100. Any questions you have I would be glad to answer.
one of the projects i am currently working on is a 65 f100 sb. the motor (428) and bigin bigout short tailshaft toploader 4speed are installed. the mr gasket shifter won't quite fit within the removeable floor panel. the linkage rods have about an inch on adjustment and with some fabrication of a new adapter for the transmission or adjustment to the current adapter the linkage may fit within the removeable floor panel. additionally i have a long tailshaft bibo toploader in a 69fairlane rcode cobra that is soon to be dismantled.jim.
My 69 had a column shift originally, so no removable hump. I cut the floor for the shfter and the shifter comes up in front of the seat. Right now, I have a Ford shifter ( soon to be Hurst ) and it clears the seat ( bench), although close. I have a set or original type buckets to go in sometime too, but it works with the bench.
