Post Goin With a Big Block

Would a 76 460 with a c-6 tranny be good in a 71 F250 4x4 and if so what sort of fabricating would I expect to make it all work. Right now I'm running a sluggish 390 with manual trans.

You already have a big block. Sure the 460 and C6 can be dropped in, but it is kinda a hassle. Are you sure that you have a 390 ? If your truck is running the original engine it would have a 352 or a 360. Both of these engines are visually identical to a 390. If you really only have a 352 or 360, upgrading to a 390 will make a dramatic differance. If you already have a 390, it can be awakened further by opening up the heads and manifolds, getting some headers and a bit more cam. A better ignition helps the old trucks alot too. Check your stroke and let us know what you find. If you have a 390/4spd and you deciede you have to swap it out, where are are you ? I want your 390 and trans. DF

I could be wrong, but I don't think the 352 and the 360 were ever offered in the same year. In a 1971 he could have a 360, but not a 352. I think, and I admit this a little fuzzy, the 352's run ended in the mid-60's some time.

You're correct. 1967 was the last year for the 352. From 1968 to 1976, the big block choices were the 360 and 390, but I'm pretty sure that the 390 was only available in 2wd trucks. Thus, if his motor is original, it should be a 360. To get serious performance, he either needs to stroke it to 390 or 410 cid, or replace it with a 429/460. Neither is "easy", but stroking the existing motor is relatively simple and cheap when compared to swapping in a motor from a different family.

390GT, uh.........my books tell me ford never offered the 390 in the 4x4. For some reason they seemed to think the 352 or the360 was enough. There are vast numbers of 4x4s with 390s however, because when a 352/360 failed or got tired, a 390 was a drop-in replacemant. As to the 460s, memory says 77 or 78 ? DF

The stock engine should be a 360. But for the same cost of buying and droping in a 460 the current big block could be built to stomp all over a 460. Everybody always gets all excited because a 460 has the biggest cubes, but it is NOT a screamer of an engine. Stump pullin torque, sure, but I'd think about upgrading what ya have.
