HOT wire

An 86 F250, 6 cyl. If you look at the coil, there are 2 wires. Lets call them front and back. The front wire goes into the cab, in one big glob of wires. When it gets to the cab, it goes into a 'rubber' junction and comes out on the other side. The wire that comes out on the other side is VERY hot to touch, when the key is on or the vehicle is running.

I am 100% clueless when it comes to electrical issues. Could someone give me a clue as how to approach this. Nothing looks abnormal with the electrical/charging, etc.

that wire should be a resistance wire to limit voltage. i am not sure if it is supposed to be hot but they can get warm because it is a form of resistor.

This is too hot. The wire inside has actually changed blueish, instead of copper.

What's the color code of the wire?

Does the truck run?

Its a red with a green stripe. Truck runs fine. If I cut the wire, which I did, it will run so long as the starter is engaged. Once you let off the starter, it dies. I just drove 20 miles...and it is HOT! Its apparently been like that forever.

I was putting an aftermarket temp gauge in and was wiring the light for it when I touched the bundle and noticed it was hot. I then dissected the bundle and found the culprit.

If I had a wiring diagram, I might be able to just cut it and run a new one. I searched for a diagram here, but nothing to be found without going through a bazillion posts.

ford390gashog has got to be right.

My Haynes manual diagram does not show a red with green going to the coil positive, but if you say it there, it must be. Your truck does not agree with my only reference. But if the wire is that hot, it is not the fault of the wire but it is running too much current for some reason. So I doubt that replacing the wire is going to solve the problem. Or, if it is in fact a resistor wire a certain amount of heat is understandable. Maybe the bluish color of the conductor is normal for the resistance wire. (?)

If you can't get hold of a good wiring diagram, try asking Franklin in the electrical forum if that is a normal situation.

Does the truck have an aftermarket (non factory) coil?

Not to my knowledge. Doesnt look it, I can look closer maybe. The wires that go to the plug that plugs to the coil, are in bad shape. They need to be shortened about 2" each, they are bare. Can I cut the plug out and somehow pull the wires out of the plug and redo them?

Bdox,

The wire that goes from the coil, it smaller diameter, then it jumps to a large wire and goes through the firewall. It goes into a rubber block (what is that exactly?), when it comes out, it is the same color code but it is a smaller wire. I am going to guess that it is stock, but cant be sure.

Can anyone tell me where this wire goes? I am thinking it might go to the back of the fule block, but am not sure. I know when I cut the wire under the dash, the truck wont run. When I join them and hit it with a test light, the light fires with the cylinders.

Dungeon_Master,

Could you email me the last 2? I cant read them here.

#1 kinda looks like it. I wonder how you get at the ignition switch on the steering column?

Thanks for the help!

Diagram #1 and diagram #2 don't seem to agree, which is the problem I am having. Neither one specifies a resistance wire, or am I just missing it?

I am thinking it must be the 'run' wire, from the ignition switch. I think I will pull the fuse block off and see if it goes to there. If it does, I dont see why I couldnt replace it with a heavier gauge wire, if it is that straight forward.

Ok, here is what I found out.

From the front side of the coil, a small wire, then it changes to a big reg/green wire (this connection is not stock). From there it goes to another one of them rubber junctions and comes out as a big reg/green, big brown/pink and a small red/green (which says resistor on it). This is where it starts to get hot. Through the firewall, comes up by the headlight switch area. The small, hot wire then goes to another rubber block where it comes out as 2 big r/g and 1 small blue/white. That is the end of the heat. So basically, the resistor wire is hot from the engine compartment to inside the cab, until it goes into the rubber block thingy.

Making any sense?
