Just finished shimming my fuel pressure regulator on my '02 F350 and installed a gauge to read fuel pressure and I now have 100 PSIG. What is normal and what works good? I don't know if it made a difference or not. Any info would be appreciated.
What I did was insert a 5/32" ball in the spring pocket of the pintle.
Nonsince, The Ford pump is rated to 100psi. I toyed with other settings up to 130psi. The high pressure pump will stahl up there. The difference between 53 and 70 is big. Go to 100is huge. Over 100 is maginal. Get an air separator on with the fuel pressure up and you have a 7.3 that sounds and runs like a 6.0.
Best results should be between 65-75 psi. Also are you reading the pressure from the rail or the fuel bowl?
That is the pressure in the filter housing. I have had to pull of the road last night to bleed the air out of the housing. Is this going to be a problem?
What is an air seperator?
Thanks VQ2Fast4U and ramsmoker

I personally am not comfortable running anything over 80 PSI. That's a plastic filter lid.
Air in your fuel, that's a big subject, and a big job to properly repair it. Once it's done, you won't recognize the way your truck sounds. I relocated my fuel pump to inside the tank to make sure that no air gets introduced into the fuel stream. It was the single most effective mod that I have done to clean up the sound of the engine, even after I did all the other stuff first.
If you have the facility to do it, I highly recommend it.
Actually Ford repair manual says 45 to 75 PSI is factory settings although the regulator is user reset capable. I don't see where the injectors are a multiplying type, so the only advantage that I can see would be able to refill them faster and possibly get a better load with each squirt.
Exactly. It isn't hard to change the pressure up and down. I do it all the time to evaluate my mods. Kwik's got a great fix for the air with the intank pump. The manufacures went this way because of the effect of air in injected engines. My only dislike of it is every thing down stream is subject to the high pressure like any aftermarket fuel filters or seperators. I havn't tested my seperator with high pressure to see what happens. I do know in low pressure I was unable to sneek any air past it. Weather you keep the pressure up above 75psi is up to you. I have been from 53psi to 130psi and back. The pump is designed for 100psi. If you like the difference from 53psi to 75psi, your gonna love the bump into the 90's.
The truck stalled on me last night and I found the fuel pump would not run. Tested for 12v at the pump and meter read zero. To get home I disconnected factory wiring and hot wired the pump direct to battery and then to ground. That got me home but why isn't the voltage being applied. Does anyone have a wiring diagram on line? I would think if a safety device shut the pump down it would bring up a code. There is no check engine light showing.
On the passenger side kick panel below the glovebox there is a hole. You'll see something about "reset" or "fuel relay" cast into the plastic. Reach through the hole and try pushing the button that is pointed straight up. It's the inertia switch that shuts off if you get in a wreck. It might have tripped for no apparent reason.
Mine did this at 130psi only and did the same thing. I had the key on and jumped the + post and she started running again. After I went back to 95psi i havn't had it happen again.
Thanks again for the imput guys. To answer Kwik, yes the upset relay is set. And ramsmoker, I will try to get under the truck today to see if power is there. Maybe whatever has it locked out has reset itself by now.
I am thinking, if a relay operates the pump, there must be one or more devices that operate the relay. Maybe one of those devices is a pressure limiting switch that I tripped or maybe the relay itself is toast. A wirind diagram sure would help. Anyone know where I could lay my hands on one?
