Anyone know a cute fast trick for installing a stock Radio? It looks like I have to dismount the whole vent/blower/heater...

Take the glove box liner out and go in from that side. That's how Ford says to do it.

It's probably the speaker. The paper is real thin and the sun beats on it all day. This causes it to warp and hang up the voice coil. The factory grillcloth slows it down a little but if it's had any moisture, it's a gonner. I have pulled quite a few of these speakers with only a few being usable. The bad news is, the stupid thing is so unique that you can't easily replace it with anything off the shelf. First they use a clamp that wraps around the back of the speaker, and then the speaker has a square magnet that fits through a square hole in the clamp. Of course they are an oddball size oval. Thanks a lot guys. I've taken them to custom shops that rebuild all kinds of speakers and they won't touch them. Another thing is the depth; you can't go much deeper than the stock speaker depth before you hit the top of the radio chassis. Maybe somebody here has found a source for these speakers or a suitable substitute. I put a receiver in my dash with speakers in their own boxes. The open hole where the dash speaker once was now provides extra ventilation for the receiver.

Thanks all... well I guess I'll mount after market ones in the door.... anyone know how I can find the radio condensor? I just wired it directly to the hot side of the battery with a end-line fuse...

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 17-Feb-02 AT 07:00 PM (EST)]Radio condsensors are usually mounted on the coil.

In-line "suppressors" can be had at Radio Shack.

on the very last page of my current LMC catalog, there is a dual-voice coil speaker, (stereo!!) that is supposed to fit in the dash of any '48 to '72 pickup.

i called and asked if they were SURE, as that seemed like a pretty big range. the girl on the other end said she'd heard that the bolt holes didn't line up in some applications...but like someone has already mentioned, in '67 to '72 it's held in by a clamp.

i ordered it- it looks like a quality unit. very heavy magnet. unfortunately i have yet to try and install it- been pretty busy. i can let you know after this week, hopefully.

(unless someone else out there already has one.....?)

No rush sam but I’d be interested in how it turns out. Sounds like the replacement speaker they sell for early mustangs. Guess I gotta get a new LMC cat. My original idea was to mount a dual voice coil woofer in the dash and use small remote satellite speakers for the right and left channels.

Sam, let me know how it fits. If it's a good one, please let me know cost and where to get it. I assume the wires don't have the Ford plug? So will you just clip the old one and wired it on the speaker wires?... I'vee never heard a radio do what this one is doing... the volume is so low full blast you have to put your ear up to the speaker to even here a a faint noise..... guess it's gotta be the speaker....

Sounds like a ground problem.
Did you try another source of radio to check the speaker?
and the same for the radio ?
Also, check the wire from the speaker contact to the speaker cone.

Don't hook it to the coil Lonnie.
You're trying to get AWAY from ignition noise.

Is there not a keyed Acc spot on the fuse box ?

didn't look that far Dennis, I guess having it at the battery isn't that bad. Still looking for speaker problem, w/o having to re-pull the radio again... guess I'll just go and get some that mount on the door... maybe that will fix the sound *smile*,,, just got back from three different auto parts (and JC Witbey) and still can't find a new tail light socket. Emailed JC and hopefully they will tracket some down.
