I have a 1988 5.0 that i am building. I have new speed pro pistons. I am using a flywheel for an automatic, but the engine was origionally a 5sp. If I use a stock balancer should i need to have the entire rotating assembly balanced?
Yes its a stock rebuild. Except for the hyperutectic pistons. (same comp. ratio) Its going into a bronco II. Im reusing the factory rods, and the crank has been turned .10 under. Should I just use a oem damper and auto flywheel?
you don't have to use an OEM dampner, you just have to have one that has the same imbalance as the original, but I would atleast weigh the new pistons and compare that weight to the old ones you might, and probably will find they are different which will cause some out of balance. most people never pay any attention to it and get by just fine, but I really like to have even street engines balanced, it makes them run better, stronger, smoother, and longer.
Absolutely. No reason not to, but especially if you had your crank turned, you're changing to a flexplate, and you changed pistons. Unless you really enjoy rebuilding your motor more often than necessary, it's worth the $100-$150. I got a heck of a deal on my balance job from one of the best in the country for $100, but it was also part of a bore, blueprint and balance package deal. (Moritz Machine in Tulsa, Of St. Moritz AA Funny Car fame). Like monsterbaby said, stronger, smoother, longer!
I talked with our local machine shop, they quoted me at a balance for 125 bucks. Ill take the time to do it. Its not that much $$ anyway. Thanks for the input!
