Is this a good idea?

With all due respect, I would be concerned if I were you. California's Crappy ideas are spreading north, and east. Just ask the people in Portland.

I would keep all the smog stuff in a box, for possible future use at least. Just incase.

Just my opinion.

The trends that are happening in parts of Arizona, Tennesse, Oregon, Nevada, etc... seem very familiar to what happened here in California back in the 80's. It all started in L.A. you see. Just like I predict that the treadmill test will be required statewide here in 5 to 10 years.

And God knows I hope I'm wrong.

I have to agree with Navymid08. Stick with the carbed motor. I got away from the efi because i got tired of replacing sensors. Carbs you do have to tweek but the electronics are not near as hard to diagnos. that "check engine" light gets real annoying.

thanks everyone for all your input it seems like the carb engine is the way to go so we will probably do that but we will be putting the 5 speed inthat came with the 89 then figure out which rear end to go with , son wants taller tires and a lift for the truck.

My OPINION, use the original 300. Rebuild it basically stock, but port the heads and add a good 3 angle valve job. Put in the stock cam, add a Offenhowser dual port intake and Holley 4 bbl carb. Like mine!. Lots of torque and decent mileage. I also added a 6AL ignition and coil. Get late model (cant remember the year, 88 or so) split manifolds and put in a good 2.5 inch exhaust (I used a flowmaster muffler). Get a five speed to go behind it and have fun.
