Friction modifier in T-case fluid?

In an earlier post on a question I had about t-case fluid - (changing it as suggested to repair a 'jerking' or 'grabbing' felt on acceleration in straight line from stop, going about 1/2 block in distance) - it was suggested that if you change your tcase fluid (putting in synthetic) that you should or could also add to the tcase fluid the same friction modifier that we put in our rear LS differential. Can anyone verify that it's ok to do this? I can't find any specs that say you can put friction modifier in a tcase. I'm changing the fluid this weekend and would appreciate any help. Last time I changed it (at 30k miles) it was a direct swap for factory fluid with Ford synthetic. The fluid change actually helped remove the 'buzzing/jerking' I felt in the tcase. Now, at 66k miles, I'm feeling or hearing the same noise/vibration. Nothing bad, only for a couple of seconds or so. I'll change the fluid with the synth again but should I add friction modifier? Thanks.

i would not add any friction modifier. the friction modifier is sulfer based and will eat the t case. it is only for hypoid gears.

I didn't want to say this before, but when I read that suggestion I felt similarily. Not that I don't have some serious education to back this up; however the poster appeared to be a service tech, it is possibly the worst thing I've heard of. As gashog says, the sulfer content is there to prevent spalling of high pressure surfaces. I just don't see how this would help the t-case clutches.

But who knows...

I agree with both of you. I'm just going to stick with a simple fluid replacement, just like the book says. That should be enough. Thanks for backing me up on my suspicion/concern.

I got into some deep techincal support today with two techs I'd bet my life on. The thought it was a nonesense idea to put friction modifier in the t-case. They remembered putting a couple ounces in a transmission to eliminate a shudder.

Also, they told me to tell you to check on a 'shudder fix' PCM reflash from your dealer. (It is apparently a pretty well known option in the WDS.)

lubeguard does sell a friction modifier for use in trannies that is non sulfer base if you want to give that a shot. its the same stuff used to eliminate shudder in trannies. runs 6.00 a tube at napa or most other parts stores.

you can't use gear oil in the transfer case.

ummm i know doof. royal purple makes the specificied oil for the transfer case front axle and rear end. so please don't try to act like your correcting me on something. and in all cases of their fluids you don't need a friction modifier.

Holiday, how do you know he was directing that towards you and not someone else looking at this thread who might not know that info? ford390gashog has given loads of useful information on this board. Please don't be so quick to judge. When you attack someone like you did, it affects your image more than the person you comment on.
