clutch freeplay

My father in-law was driving my truck around last week (90 150 305 M5OD 4x4) and made a comment about my clutch. It hadn't occured to me before he said anything, but now that he has I think he is righ and now I'm slighly concerned.

My free play (catch point) on my clutch is very high....that is when letting the clutch out, it is almost out when the catch point starts. The clutch is strong, so I'm sure it is engaging fully. There is 6in between the pedal and the floor. Haynes says it is supposed to start catching 2 in off the floor...mine starts about 3-4. Its a hydrolic clutch and the procedure for adjustment is beyond my willing realm. I was thinking about gettting it checked out and adjusted if necessary. Haynes says degree of freeplay can be an indication of clutch wear. Am I reading the freeplay specs backwards? Anyone else have this problem or have comments?

Thumbs up

I had a problem with my 85 E150 van clutch adjustment. I turned out the mounting location for the master cylinder was stress fractured from years of use and poor design. When I pushed on the clutch pedel, the floor flexed, reducing the stroke of the master cylinder. I was told that on some pickups the dashboard flexes. I reinforced my floor and added adjustment to the rod that is between the master cylinder and pedal assy. Look for the post Dragon Van Clutch Fixed a few pages back. What a difference my fix made. I could hardly get into reverse before my fix. Even if you don't have any flex, the adjustment mod might work for you. Ford might have different lenght rods also, but I like my fix.

the conclusion is clutch plate wear. When it starts to slip, I'll replace it.
