Which exhaust?

Hi all im new to the forum and was wondering which exhaust systems you prefer and recommend. I have a 97 f150 4.6 v8 and i want to make it loud with a deep tone. How do the Magnaflow, flowmasters, and gibson compare? i want a little better gas mileage much better torque and a better sounding truck. any sugestions? thanks.

Many people recommend Magnaflow.

I like the Flowmaster sound, but run Magnaflow due to it's flow-through design (you can see through it), which is said to offer improved power.

Flowmaster will out perform the Magnaflow and others on the dyno. Flowmaster sounds good--with a mellow sound. Alot of people run no muffler at all--they say that the cat is enough,-- for me I went with a Flowmaster.

I used to have a flowmaster and I just recently went to straight pipe like fire105 said, it is true the cats really muffle the sound and my truck really wasn't that much loader compared to the flowmaster, although it is a whole lot cheaper.

Ive got a Flowmaster 50 Series on my truck and I like it. Its nice and loud outside the truck, but you dont really hear it inside the truck unless you are accelerating.
When I first got my truck it didnt have any muffler at all (just the cat with 2 1/2 duals) and let me tell you, it was A LOT louder without the muffler.

Agreed with XTRFORD and Disagree with DEERE...I have true duals from cat back, no mufflers with only 3" tips. My truck is not near as loud as a truck with Flowmasters, etc. Your cats baffle ALOT of the noise, where you flowmaster will in turn make it louder again. My truck has a nice deep rumble on acceleration and then mellows out quitely at cruising speeds. Its all your own preference, its a matter of opinion question...I dont like really loud exhaust. So that should tell you something...I have no mufflers and am extremely happy with the sound! Although, dont expect nothing in increased mileage...nothing to really notice anyways!

I've got a Borla Stainless Steel Cat-Back on my 2003 5.4 and love it. It has a nice sound but it's not 'obnoxious' nor does it shake the truck. It also added about 12 extra horses. It's more expensive than the other brands but I think it's well worth it.

Can you list your source for this?
The only real dyno pulls I've seen show the oppposite.
Not a huge difference, though. And those were on blown trucks.

Id love to hear how a truck's exhaust can be louder with a cat and muffler than it would be with a cat and no muffler.

i went with the magnaflows yesterday because of the lifetime warranty and they are stainless. Ive had flowmasters on my suburban and it was nice but the rusted off in 2 yrs right after the warranty was up. Im not trying to be obnoxiously loud just loud enough to hear me tearin up the hill. thanks for all the replys.

another question i got is what if i just left the pipes off at the muffler is that good for the exhaust?

Agreed. I've got Borla exhaust on my truck and my car, both have a nice, deep tone without too much resonance at speed. Of course they are more expensive, but not *that* much more.

im running straight pipes w/cats but at the rearend i choked it down to 2 1/4 to the bumper and put 4" tips over the 2 1/4 and run the 4" out about 4" or 5". now it cackles and it has a deep tone. haven't heard another one sound the same yet.

A flowmaster isnt like your typical muffler if you havent noticed! They are made to give you that deep throaty sound! Your just calling it a "muffler" well a flowmaster isnt a typical muffler, how many have you heard that sound just like stock...NONE! Your cats block alot of noise which is why my cat back exhaust, no muffler, is not as loud as a flowmaster exhaust. I have a buddy, exact same truck, 5.4L etc, with his flowmaster next to mine...hes louder especially at crusing speeds. Now complete straight pipes, YES I agree with you.

^^^i don't know why you have to say typical muffler 2 times but flowmasters rust after a while, the next time ibuy flowmasters is when they got a lifetime garentee and stainless.
