Sounds dumb, but it worked.

I recently developed a severe miss at all throttle positions on my 02 v10. Now I figured right away that it was a coil thanks to FTE, I decided I did not want to swap coils to narrow it down to find the faulty coil, (there has got to be an easier way). So heres where the dumb part comes in, I thought since I had a basically dead cylinder it would stay cooler longer when the engine is started, so I took butter, yes you read it right "butter", and put some on the top of each exhaust port to see what one took longest to melt. Pretty stupid Huh? Well, it worked, this was a cold engine mind you, the #6 cylinder did not melt the butter right away when I started the engine. So I took the coil off of the #6 and found the boot had water and dirt all over it, I looked down in the spark plug hole and seen it was full of water, I thought it was anti freeze at first, but it was not. So I blew the hole out with compressed air and inspected the spark plug, cleaned the coil boot and put it back in the truck, problem solved. I don't know how water got in there, I checked all the other plug holes and they were all dry, I thought that the boot on the coil did not have a good seal on it when I washed the engine a couple months ago, but why did it take so long to develope the miss?
Well it runs good now, and I saved myself some time using butter to find a dead cylinder, and my truck smells yummy too.

The butter is a better idea then my finger! (how I isolated the last one)
I use a IR thermo gun in my shop, but I gotta caution: COPs can fail completely or intermittently so the butter, IR-gun, or finger may not isolate a COP that only fails from high vibration, too hot, or under heavy loads (fast firing low dwell time)

Stupid is as stupid does...

I don't think it's stupid. Got the job done, didn't it. Good idea, imo.

Sometimes the COP just won't seat, so you have to use a sealer of some kind. BUT DO NOT use anything that will setup hard. I use the silicone grease (di-electric) that I used on the contact (COP to plug). Works fine. I only had one COP that didn't seat against the head and it was a factory FUBAR on the seating area.

We sneaked in at the old theater in Texarkana....it was rated X at the time and if you didn't see it you weren't that cool. I was 16 yrs old at the time and wanted to be cool. I never thought folks could or would do such as that...
