trans guage reads maximum

As soon as I switch the ignition on it maxes out with a cold engine.
I have a good ground and tepped power per dieselmanor's excellent diagram.
I bought a perma cool trans filter with guage. Maybe the sending unit is bad?
I havent hooked up the light to it yet.

Thanks in advance

Im thinking problem is with sending unit, Most sending units that I have seen need to ground the outside and does a resistance comparision to give temp. Did you have to install the temp probe? is there a lot of tape? Is the outer casing of the filter grounded? Do you have a positive and a negative wire to the temp probe?

Just throwing out ideas to check as I am not familiar with the filter you have.

Mine did the same thing. I got under the truck and followed the wire going to the sending unit. The nut on the sending unit wasnt tight and wasnt getting a good connection. After that it works great. Either bad connection or the sending unit itself.

Make sure that the wire is not grounded out anywhere. You may have pinched the wire when you installed the gauge pod. if you unhook the sensor it should not move. Most gauges work by ground. If it still move when the sensor is unplugged its grounded out elsewhere.

Did you use Teflon plumbers tape when you installed the sensor? If so, that can prevent a proper ground.

No teflon tape should be used!! The sensor needs to ground to the case. Remove the sensor, remove the tape and reinstall. This should fix the problem. Let us know!

mine is just the opposite. the gauge never moves off 100*. i am thinking it's a ground, so how should i ground it? run a wire from the end of the sending unit stud to the frame or what? ill go out and check the connection at the back of the gauge.

its odd odd to have a ground on both ends, but I'm not an engineer.
I cleaned off the teflon with no results.
The mount may not be tight enough, I used a stainless steel self tapper which trends to strip so I'll replace with a galvy one maybe tonight.
Its 110 outside and I have an eyeful of tranny. Its miller time.

on another note, I had to put an elbow to get the lines in without kinking.
Will the cause an issue with shifting? maybe I am overanalysing but it seems off a tad.
It shifts later and releases later. Just a tad.

Fluid levels are ok.

Now I'm confused - where did you put the sensor?

It mounts in between the intake and output of the filter bracket.

Did you try to disconnect the wire and see what happens? If the gauge doesn't change touch the wire to a ground and see what happens. If nothing changes i would think your is grounded out somewhere. I'm can't figure out were you have it mounted either? Mine is mounted in the trans by the shift linkage.

Lancer's suggestion for diagnosing it sounds like a good one. Mine, too, is in the trans in front of the shift linkage.
