Intercoolers

hey folks.
the ic bug has bitten. so i have been shopping. got a few questions.

for the superduty ic's i notice there are 2 kinds.

1 has plastic side tanks.
1 has aluminum side tanks.

which one is better? i assume all aluminum one.
is one more prone to have leaks or fail over the other?

then i see 6slow ics. these appear by the pictures to be much taller than the 7.3 ic. is this correct?

i wish gts would answer his email so i could see if he makes an obs pipe /mounting kit for 6 slow. or i guess i could borrow my dads welder.

thanks

I used the GTS kit to install a 6 oh cooler. The only thing you'll need is a 3 1/4 to 3" coupler/boot for the one sire of the IC. I bought mine from Ford. You can find them online alot cheapre though...I was in a hurry and did'nt want to wait for the mail. THe mounting hardware may have to be moded a little..depending on how the IC mounts. Iv'e seen a couple different ones. As far as plastic/aluminum....the latter is supposed to be less prone to fail...but I personaly have never heard of one failing that wasen't under extreme(60+psi) boost.
As far as the GTS issue. I wish ya good luck...I waited 2 months for my kit. MAybe a isolated instance...I dunno.
Good luck

i waited 2 months for my kit also for another truck recently. i wont do business with him again.

superduty pipes can be modded to work if you have acess to a welder and find a shop up there that can mandrel bend 3" then just get a EARLY 99 y pipe and clamp.

on the aluminum or plastic thing.....ive never seen either fail

i say go with a 6oh cooler, its plenty of ic unless ya start pushing alot of boost. then you run the risk of popping the endtanks off. i ran mine for 30k miles and it worked great.

The change from aluminum to plastic tanks happened sometime in 01 I think. Couldn't guess why, don't know that one is any better than the other. The 6.0 cooler has about 20% more frontal area and also has plastic tanks. Seen a few post where the 6.0 guys can push 50+ psi through them without popping the tanks. Don't know for how long though.

i think the thing with the plastic tanks is there cheaper to mfg than aluminum and lighter wieght. i would put a 6.blow intercooler in mine but as soon as a larger turbo goes back in the tapercore is going back in.....

still tring to make the turbo decision......gtp38r? qssb h2e? ball buster? gtp37r? or the turbo bean has brewed up.....

hmmmmmmm

the qssb h2e from wop is a complete bolt on kit, not a bad job to do. i had a hypermax h2e on the truck when i had some huge hybrids in it.

the ballbearing turbos require the superduty pedistal, uppipes, collector, ypipe, and plenums.

bean is supposed to have a bolt on that works with our pedistal and upipes im gonna call him tommorow.

i gotta get all this stuff done in the next 2 months

If you go with the 6.0 IC and have a 4x2, you will need to lower your sway bar 3 to 4 inches depending on how you mount the IC. I did mine last weekend:

I am going to fab the pipes this weekend. After several attempts to contact GTS and no responses I am fab'n everything. It is a shame they are not more response becase they have a good product.

Best of luck.
