It should have only failed for the brakes and for the wiper being ripped, those are safety issues right off the bat. As far as it starting in gear, that is a judgement call- also is related to safety. Judgement call on the suspesion parts, also. It should fail for p/s or brake line leaking. Everything else listed is just a bonus for him should you decide to let him fix it.
A phone call to your local Department of Public Safety will get answers to inspection related questions. A lot of times, you may even be able to talk to the guy in charge of inspection stations for that area. If there are any questions as to the way those guys are operating, he'll put an end to them being able to perform inspections.
In North Carolina your truck would have to have all lights working and flashing, horn blowing, E brake holding, wipers in good shape, and tires with 3/32 tread. All of the rest is BS unless the front end is really bad.
I would recommend taking it somewhere else.

In the cool still quiet of night, you can hear chevies rusting away.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 29-Mar-02 AT 07:29 PM (EST)]Oh yea.... theres no way im taking it back to them. I live in virginia Beach virginia... My truck does not need all that stuff. it was restored almost all the way. look at it in the gallery
Oh yea. i am i wrong but didnt these trucks start in gear from the factory?
Only if they're a standard trans. If you have an automatic, you just need to adjust your neutral start switch a little- and that adjustment may even fix the backup lights. John's right, it depends on the mechanic for the borderline things. Never hurts to have friends in high places
CRJ, fix the brakes and try another 'inspector'. The purpose of getting an inspection is to raise extra tax revenue, the state really doesn't care if you pass or not. It sounds to me as though your inspector was asking you for a bribe. DF
I took my truck to my grandpa and he said that my rear brakes are fine, they just need to be adjusted a little. The my E brake will work. He said that i dont have to have reverse lights, if the bulbs arent in there. He said that the only thing they might get me for is my kingpins being loose. He said there is allowed to be a 1/4 inch in play in them.. anyone know for sure? I'm taking it to a place that my grandpa said too. The owner has like four 67-79 trucks. So it should be allright. I HOPE!
Here in Kansas, you are not even required to have a windshield.. go figure...
Go find a local friendly cop or trooper, and have him explain what is required at the inspection. this sounds like some madman is declaring war on vintage vehicles.
WOW! It sounds like they were being assh*les as usual. They'll say anything if they decide that YOU shouldn't be on the road. Have your grandfather (or someone who is middle aged or older) take it to another sticker station... they won't point out nearly as many flaws. I get the same thing when I take my vehicles in for a sticker... They take one look at me (22) and decide that I shouldn't be on the road regardless of the condition of my vehicle. Sounds like you're on your way to fixing what needs to be fixed and trying a garage that isn't crooked. I guess they don't realize how badly it hurts their name when they distort the law like that. Whatever you do don't give them your business! Doing the work yourself is exactly what they DON'T WANT!!
Tis inspection sounds totaly bogus to me. Search the net for "State Inspections" I found my states (Texas) Department of transportation site, and it was a big help. They had a list of things inspected and details on each one. I found out that I didn't need to have side-mirrors on my doors, just in case the inspectors gave me trouble. They didn't check any of the suspension components, nore did they care about the engines condition.
P.S. I live in the country, so I'm not sure if they're just more leanient out here or what. I know we're not required to do emissions test out here, they just look under the hood to see if all your smog equippment is hooked up.
This is funny............I took it to my grandpa's friend and he passed it with no problem. haahhahahahah. Only thing he said was that my lights on top of my truck have to work... so he fixed them, and i was off for 25$. Then i went home and took my exhuast pipe's off and am running open headers.
