I'm getting an 88 bronco, and i'm wanting to put some bigger tires on it (not that much bigger, maybe 35's or so). Do you think that i should swap out the 8.8 in the rear for a 9 inch i have? the 9 inch was behind a 77 460, so it should be strong enough for the 351, right? I'll raplace the gears in the 9inch, but i don't know that much about the difference between the two. is it a hard swap, or should i just make the 8.8 i've got in there stronger?
no, i don't think they're the right gears for the truck, i'd have to check again to make sure. I was thinking that if i was to put bigger tires on it anyways, then i'm going to have to change the gears eventually too, so i thought that since everyone says that the 9" is the strongest and best, i should go with it. But now i think i'll just stick with i got until it breaks, lol.
Mtthwvn73, I was asking what gears you have the 9" in, b/c if it was the same gears you were going to switch to, then it would be perfect, and save you a couple hundred dollars.
I don't think it is though, the 9" only has like 3:25 or something. lol, i don't think bronco's even had that high of gears. Is there any company's that make aftermarket parts for the 8.8? i know there's alot of stuff for the 9 inch, but i don't know what you can get for the 8.8's
The 9" is way easyier to set up new gears. You do it on the bench. And theres tons of cheap good upgrades for that dif. But if you convert the 8.8 to full float axles and put a dif cover that has carrier bearing braces on it, it's pretty much bullit proof.
