when i bought my 2001 ex it was showing 17 mpg on the overhead. since then i have changed the airfilter and last night changed the fuel filter. it is now running at 14.8mpg. i know its not always highway miles, but should it have dropped this much? what can i do to improve this? i know a programmer is one fix, still trying to decide on which one of those to get. just wandering if there is anything else. thanks
The meter only shows average mileage not instant mileage. I have found mine to be pretty accurate although since I got it chipped, I have not found out whether it is accurate. It seemed to be reasonably accurate. I find it by filling up and then squeezing the fuel into the tank till I can see it at the nozzle. Give the truck a few shakes and fill till I cannot fill any more. Then I calculate the mpg.
Could be you have bad fuel or something changed. Not sure. You have to virtually run it past half a tank to get accurate mileage.
Like aklim said, I think you probably caught a bad tank of diesel. Run some Lucas fuel additive and that should clean up any type of contamination. It normally runs about $7-$8 a bottle but it does the job, make sure and use the whole bottle for maximum effect.
I personally like the "Diesel Power" brand from Gold Eagle....I live in western PA and we have wet nasty winters and you always hear of some poor fello that has a fuel issue....knock on wood I have never plugged my diesel in, and never had a hard start or run running truck. I use the Diesel Power with every tank.
After saying that, I average about 13.5~14.5 MPG in town. We live in mountains so there is no level road and that as well kills mileage. On the interstate I have clicked off solid 18's with my 33" tires and hubs locked. I have never taken my hubs out of the manually locked position in any truck I have owned in the last 22 years, so I cant say if it actually saves any gas at all.
