Rebuilt 289, MAJOR problem!!!

I just installed my fresh 289 into my 68 Ranger, as I was filling the radiator, I noticed the oil pressure line was turning green, antifreeze was filling the line. Now correct me if I am wrong, but the threaded hole in the block right behind the fuel pump is oil right? Good greif where did I go wrong here? I thought I made sure all of my gaskets were sealed properly, I cant even think where the two could be mixing, help please!!!

no that plug is the block drain plug for the coolant the oil pressure port is by the oil filter or behind the intake manifold.

On my 77 302 that position sounds about right. I have attached a link to a photo of my engine prior to pulling it out for a rebuild. In the picture the timing cover has already been removed, but you can clearly see the aluminum oil sender fitting and oil pressure sending unit in the postion I believe you are talking about. I don't know if it is different for you 289 or not? The timing cover which has been removed has the fuel pump mounted just in front of that sending unit fitting. Hope this helps.

Yes, That is it, the water drain is on the other side if the engine. Anyhow, it was a false alarm, the fluid in the line was oil. Since it was fresh oil (I guess) it gave off a greenish hue in the line. I dicovered a small crack in the oil line at the guage from me tightening it down to much like the big gorilla I am, so oil had filled the line earlier when I was cranking the engine, and was about to make a mess in my interior. Anyway, thanks for the replies and trying to sooth me in my panic state!!

I would like to hook up a true oil pressure gauge instead of my oil pressure idiot light setup that my truck currently has. If I install a oil pressure sending unit in place of my idiot light sending unit and wire it direct to an after market oil pressure guage will the idiot light stay on, since I will have disconnected it? I hope my question makes sense?

Ha. Couldn't possibly care unless until she has to drive it sometime. Then it better run perfect. ;-)
