Does anyone know if Ford painted the tranys before they were
put in the trucks? The reason I'm asking is because my trany is painted orange with some stencil letters on it, some people say tranys were never painted and those markings are from a junk yard.
As far as I know nothing has been replaced in the drivetrain, is there a way to check numbers? Engine is painted blue, if this helps.
Any help, comments are appreciated.
My 70,71 Sport Customs don't have painted tranny's, and they are both completely original. If you can tell me the letter on the vin tag in the door jamb I can tell you what it is supposed to have. Also there should be a metal tag on the housing, or numbers stamped into the housing that you could cross reference it by. It sounds like to me you've either got a junkyard tranny, or someone was awful afraid of getting it stolen?
My '68's transmission (C6) was not originally painted. I had a transmission shop owner tell me that painted trannies retain more heat, hence it is a bad idea to do it. Who knows if this is true, but it might be a reason not to paint one if someone is thinking of doing so.
I have never seen a factory painted transmission. (I have been rebuilding transmissions for about 30 years so I have seen a lot of them). Some rebuilders paint their transmissions to make it more difficult for the customer to pull a switch during the warranty period. I never liked the way painted transmissions looked so I clean and pressure wash mine. They look almost like brand new and no paint to peel off later. I doubt that a junkyard went to the trouble of painting the transmission. What you probably have is a transmission from a rebuilder. It could even be the the original transmission that was pulled and rebuilt, but it is probably a replacement.
Curtis360,
If I'm not mistaken you are asking for the "TRAN CODE" right? Its "A".
The trany is a four speed with reverse, firt gear is that low gear (low granny). There was no tag ID attached to the trany and there are a couple of numbers, I will write them down tonight and post them tomorrow.
The casing where the gears are located is painted orange, the bell housing is not painted and the top of the trany, where the shift lever goes into the trany, has an aluminum cover.
Hope this info helps, and thanks again for the help.
The A Code shows to be a New Process 435 4-Speed. As far as the numbers and lack of id tag I'm not sure, the numbers should look like the example below;
RAD-B 5 9K31
D4ZR-AA 123456
That may not help much but that's the best I got, sorry man. I'd say its gonna be hard to find if its the original tranny or not. Is it giving you troubles or are you just making sure its not going to?
The trany is working fine, my brother and I are restoring the truck from the ground up. I cleaned it a couple of weekend ago and thats when I notice that the trany was painted.
My dad bought the truck in 1980 and has never broke down, engine or trany, he bought it from a used car dealer, maybe they did some work to the trany or replaced it. I guess I will never know, but thats OK.
Thanks for the help.
