Hello guys, the day after I bought the 1971 Ford F-100, I had to have what I call a shackle bracket replaced. This part goes from the rear leaf spring to the upper frame/bed.
Does anyone know where I could have found this part? I had a body shop fabricate it from scratch for $550, while I only paid $600 for the truck (don't laugh). Of course, I didn't know about this forum at that time or I would have asked. Thanks a lot, will use the information for future occurrences.
Did the body shop try to find a salvage one? These old trucks are plentiful in countryside salvage yards in my area, and i would think that $35.00 would be more than enough. With labor at about $50.00 per hour, your bill should not have exceeded $135.00 plus tax in my opinion, and that is on the high side. For $550.00 you could call a DJM dealer and get a complete lowering kit front and rear for your truck. Apair of lowering shackles runs about $50.00. I think the shop "took" you, and that comes from a guy who is in the body business. FOMOGO
OK, the first thing I did was called every Ford dealership in my area, no luck on the shackle bracket. Then I called every spring company in St. Louis, no luck. Then I called every salvage yard within 100 miles of where I live, no luck. Then I called some OEM dealers (none of which you have mention on this forum), no luck on the shackle bracket. God, I wish I had know about this forum before I spent $550 on have one fabricated! I guess you live and learn though. But trust me, I did not just trust the body shop, I personally called everywhere I could find to call for one.
Loyd, I live in St.Louis and I have a ton of stuff for these trucks. I hate to tell you this, but I junked a truck with good shackles over the weekend. If you need anything else, send me an e-mail and I'll try to help.
Lloyd, I would not EVER use that bodyshop again. They knew they were swindling you. I would complain to the owner, then the BBB. It really makes me angry when I hear stories like this. I'd bet if you look closley at your "fabricated" shackle it has or had a part number on it.
