For anyone who has straight pipes on your 400, how do you like it? I'm running open headers now and I hate the sound and I'm wondering how much some tailpipe will help the tone. I have long tube headers and I'm going to be running true dual, 2-1/4" pipe. Thanks for the opinions.
a couple of years back my best freind had a 78 f150, it had the 400 v8. after a few differnt exhaust setups he ended up getting a cheapo set of hedman long tubes off ebay, from the headers it had 2 1/4 pipe, that went straight down the frame on each side, infront of the rear axle hung two 24 inch thrush magnum glasspacks, and then 2 tail pipes straight out the back.
in all honesty i can say this was the most wicked sounding street truck i've ever heard, under acceleration it has a very nice rumble to it, but under hard acceleration [slam it in first and stand on it] it would just scream, the best part was the cackel it would do for a few seconds before it shifted.
you didnt post any modifications you've done to your truck, but on his the exhaust was the only real mod he did to it, it has the stock 2bbl carb, stock cam, ect ect. with any performance mods im sure the sound will be all the more better.
I had a 79 F-150 with a 400, had long tube headers and just enough exhaust pipe to get both sides to exit behind the cab. I loved the way it sounded, it was really intimidating.
351M, have you ever road in a truck with purple hornies? How loud was it? I've got open headers now that dump under the cab so I'm thinkin that those purple hornies with probly get some of the noise out of the cab. This truck is my daily driver so it can't be too loud.
Ive got a 78 bronco with a 400 & straights. Motors got a small cam. Had true duals w/ 3-1/2x12ish tips that sounded good til I jumped a slue (water hole) and a few rice leeves and broke the tips off above the axle. All that crap caused about half the welds to crack, they were ***** anyway. And finally the manifold gaskets got a leak in them i found last week.
But other than those small problems it sounds decent, better than most of the SBCs in town.
My '77 Dodge has red hots(essentially the same, slightly different tone due to the design of the louvers) dumped in front of the wheels and its decent in the cab, you hear them but nothing major but alot better then it was with a 3" straight pipe in front of the pass side wheel LOL.
My 79 F250, has a built engine with RV Cam, headers, Intake, 4bbl, k&N Air. It has a nice loud rumble , especially when under a load. The exhaust is true duals with 2.25" pipes and dual 30-36" glasspaks, The problem is that the top of the glasspaks have been blown out for a year or two. It is still mildly quiet when idling, but as soon as you lay into it, you can hear the truck form several blocks away. Now, I just need a new exhaust that still sounds as loud but gives better performance. I am planning dual 3" from the headers with an x-pipe before a pair of mufflers. I will probably go with shorter paks and upsize to 3.5", then upsize again to 4" after the paks and finish it all off with flame throwers and 5" tips

I installed 2 purple hornies on my 79. I put turn downs right before the axle and it sounds really good. They aren't as loud as I hoped they would be, but they sound good.
