Rope and pulleys, not complicated at all. Just remember each pulley adds some friction.
Using 4 ropes wound on a common windlass is probably the simplest system with the least mechanical advantage (2:1). Using two ropes and more pulleys results in more complicated rigging to even out friction at each point but you can get a 4:1 mechanical advantage.

When I owned a full size bronco I built such a system... was four pulleys above the corners of the fiberglass top (on the ceiling, directly above), going to the luggage rack on the fiberglass top with hooks, and the ropes went from those hooks through the four pulleys to one wide pulley at the back of the garage and onto an electric winch. Push "up" and the fiberglass lifted off, push down, and it lowered.
The only thing that sucked about my "design" is the switches were "way over there" and aligning the bronco top while lowering it wasn't. Took a few walks back and forth. If you're smarter than me, you'll put the switches on the wall closer to the truck
