well i replaced the starter today....and then i replaced that wiggly vac advance....and then i noticed the timing was off...so i found TDC on piston one....then i noticed the distributor is uh well stuck.....it will not move...AT ALL....i tried vice grips...channel locks....pipe wrench a cant turn this sombatch.....andyes i did unscrew the little plate and bolt on the right of the "dizzy shaft"...it also seems that the original owner tried turnin it two cuz there were scrape marks around the shaft from a tool....oh and my backfire in the drivway blew a hole in the front of my muffler bout the size iv my face....lol....in with flowmasters.....
wow, good luck with that one, oxydized cast aluminum can be a bear to get unstuck especially when it is inside steel ya can't heat it because it grows more the the steel around it. If your choice of oil doesn't help try some weak acid like COKE,,,just a suggestion...Neil
It will come out wihout damaging it if you are patient with the penetrating fluid and not using something to turn that make break the cast metal
You can try tapping the Vacuum advance housing a rubber or plastic mallet occasionally but don't pretend it's a 8 ft post you are trying to hammer into the ground
well heres the issure remember the vac advance was loose....so that broke easily with sum love taps with a rubber mallet....not the vac advance but the cast metal of the distributor(need new distributor now) so out with the distributor....i used WD and let it sit for bout an hour that didnt work still usin vice grips...i need to use a pipe wrench to grap the dizzshaft an see if i can turn it.....but it seems round the base that there are nicks and gouge marks.....sum1s tried this and didnt get far....and im leaning on the engine block and...slip...oww...wut the?....the heater return house that goes into the block next to the water pump?...well yea that little steel pipe that comes outta the block was so rusted inside the house it just sheered right off....how am i gonna fix that?
When I said patience with the penetrating fluid I meant like let it sit a few days to let it do its work
The good news is that distributor can be found used in any 351M/400,460 at the wreckers.
Unless you buy new that is
If you mean that little piece of steel tube.... that can come out with a spoon chisel an hammer.
Those get replaced all the time and are always in stock at parts houses
Remember... you're parked at the right place ....FTE
haha cute lil motto...lol ne ways so they do get replaced thats good what about the rust and other half of the tube fallin into the block?and still yet...grr nevermind im about to take a huge drill to this friggin distributor! hey what other years used the same distributor on my 77? will a 76 match up?
geeze i just got off the phone with Advance Auto and they have my new distributor ....which i just recently ALMOST bought a used one from the junkyard....the guy wanted 60 for it then i called advance and they tell me 47.50....im glad i didnt buy that used one ...phew what a waste it woulda been....yea um it seems that im gonna have to really rip this thing out try to soak it for a while and be outta a truck for a couple days.......
The picture title is 77 distributor. Is that because it is in 77 pieces? Hammers are amazing tools aren't they? Theres nothing they can't fix (or destroy).
HELP!!! i put in the brand new distributor...then i find tdc then i point the rotor towards the number 1 spark plug wire....then it backfires when i try to start it...then i decided to check sumthing...i find tdc again then i open the distributor cap...and the rotor is a total 180 degrees away from SP #1 wire....so i point it back towards SP #1 wire and rotate the engine a few times via the starter....then find tdc....and lo an behold the rotor is 180 dgrees off!! what is it timing chain skipping? oh important question how many turns does the vac advance need to be adjusted? HELP I WANT TO DRIVE HOME!! ILL EVEN TAKE APART MY FRONT END IF I HAVE TOO!
ok ok i found the problem...........the gear that the gear at the bottom of the distributor meshes with?....well one of the teeth on that gear is broken...so it skips a tooth....how do i get that gear out to replace it? what shaft is it on?
