I inherited this old beast several years ago and have finally gotten 'round to getting it running. I was told the engine is a 292; it has the crossover exhaust from left to rt side in front of the engine, and it is a V-8, but other than that I don't know how to verify if it's a 292 or something different in the Y-block family. The VIN is: F60D8K36118, but I don't know whether the engine was swapped sometime in the past. Anyway, when I changed the oil and filter I was amazed by how much oil drained out of it (and spilled all over the floor when it overran my pan). I put 5-qts back in, ran her a bit, then checked the dipstick and it didn't even register. Put in 3-more qts and it still looks 2-qts low on the dipstick. The oilpan doesn't look oversized or extra deep so I suspect it may have the wrong dipstick in it. How do I determine the correct displacement of this engine. And, how can I find out what the crankcase oil capacity is supposed to be--did the HD series of engines have larger crankcase capacities???

I don't know the answers you're looking for, but I know of a thread packed with all kinds of info about Ford engines. The thread is about 460s, but there's all kinds of useful stuff in there that might be of help to you. Search the forum for a thread titled "Help! How old is my 460?". I know you're looking for info on Y-blocks, but this thread is definately worth a read. Homespun91 knows what he's talking about when it comes to engines!
According to my 57 Ford (CAR) shop manual, they all held 5 qts (272/292/312). That engine may not have the correct pan on it and the of course the dipstick might be wrong too (The REAL truck 272/292 engines may have held more.
According to my 1954/1955 truck shop manual the 239 held 5, the 256 held 6, and the 279/317 held 8 qts.
I don't know if the pans are interchangeable.
You may have to remove the pan and fill it up to see how much it holds! You never want too much oil in any engine.

10 qts does seem like a lot but in the big jobs that may be right. I would eyeball or measure how far the dipstick would go into the pan by laying it alongside of the engine. 3/4 of the way up the pan would probably be about where it should be.
My 56 had a 292 that had been worked over and it held 5 qts. after oil change. Of course the old girl leaked pretty bad so i was forever adding oil. I love the idea of a forum just for us big truck guys! Yea I know I need to set up my gallery.
Hey this question is for both of you F-600 guys.....
I am looking at a 292 in an F-100 to put in my 55 F-600.
My 239 has the fan separate from the water pump and the fan is a few inches higher than the centerline of the water pump shaft.
Does your waterpump or timing cover have a mount for the fan bearing and pully?
I want to put that 292 in my F-600.
tnx/Rick

I don't believe their is a mount there. I can't really remember. I will look tonight when I get home, the engine is still sitting on the shop floor after i pulled it in favor of a 390.
My 55 has a waterpump with a bracket as part of the casting. It is the mount for the fan baring and pully.
If yours is that way would you be interested in selling the waterpump from it?
I have found a 292 locally but it's in a 60 F-100 and it has the "other" waterpump.
I'll have to either fabricate a mount (which I suppose I can do) or find the correct setup.
I'm sure it's ing to be different with the 390.
If you could I'd like to see a picture of the front of the engine and how the fan shroud etc is set up.
The centerline of my fan is probably 5 or 6 inches above the centerline of the waterpump.
I have to assume(hope!) that the 56 F-600 is similar...
