well its time for a filter and fluid change in the auto, what kind of filter and fluid do u all use???? 97f-350 4x4 also how much fluid does it typicly use??? thanks
i just use the filters from napa. one note makes sure you tell them it a 4x4 cause 2 and 4 wheel drive have different filters becuase the pan depth is different. also you pan should have a reuseable gasket (unless some idiot tossed it) so you can just the filter only and not the kit that comes with a gasket. and the torque converter has a drain plug in it so remove the inspection cover and rotate the engine till the plug comes to the bottom and drain. then refill takes about 15 quarts but it been a while since i did mine so i can't remember for sure. just add about 6 quarts and start the truck then add about another 4 quarts and start checking the dip stick as you add.
oh yeah for fluid use dexron III. i use the chrysler aft+3 cause two years ago when i bought the truck it had a torque converter shudder and this fluid will cure that with no more shudder and no slip. i know many will think i am crazy but i a mechanic and have done this about 6 fords in the last 5 years and all are still running strong with no problems. years of experience from my dad as a mechanic and shop owner eased my concerns with it.
About to do a change on mine, it's running OK but last time out it got a little hot. I'm towing about 500 miles next weekend so I want some fresh oil in it. I know everybody and Ford says Dexron/Mercon III, but if the Chrysler oil offers more protection and is OK I'll be willing to give it a try. Do you know the major difference between the oils? Why is Dexron the only one for FORD?
As for running Chrysler fluid, as long as you feel comfortable that Chrysler has tested and developed the fluid to be compatible with Ford transmissions, go for it! Personally I think Ford is more concerned with Ford transmissions than Chrysler is.
chysler fluid (aft+3) has a friction modifier in it. the only reason i use it is cause i solves the shudder i had in my toque converter i would NOT run this if i had no issues with my trans. my trans has been running strong with the atf+3 for 2 years now but if i were to get a new trans i would run dexron III/mercon in it.
I would like to do a fluid change on my 95 Ford f-350 auto trans 2wd. i would like to use amsoil. is that ok to use in the tranny? and also does mine have the reusable filter and how much fluid does it hold?
this is my first time ever changing fluid in a tranny. so i pull off the bottom pan and then let all of that fluid drain, then i find the plug on my converter and drain that? so then how do i get fluid back in my converter and pan? where is the fill plug?
thanks
Mitch
DO YOU USE DEXRON 3, AND CHRYSLER AFT+3 MIXED TOGETHER. OR JUST CHRYSLER +3? AND WHERE DO YOU GET THE CHRYSELR TYPE FLUID? JCAB

to jcab i use striaght atf+3 but only bacuase i had a shudder otherwise i would use dexronIII.
to 79f-250custom you refill the tranny trough the dipstick tube with a funnel.
to change my tranny fluid i drop the pan (actually i drain it cause i put a drain in it) but if you don't drop the pan. but do it slowly cause you'll get a atf bath if not. then replace the filter and bolt the pan back up. if you have a reusable gasket then clean it and put it up and torque to 12 foot pounds. if you don't have a reusabel gasket buy one from ford and grind the little protursions flat on your pan and then you can use the reusable gasket. drain the torque converter and replace the plug. my truck took about 16 or 17 quarts. without flushing the cooler. that about it.
