Should I buy a new Iac?
Have you eliminated both a possible vacuum leak and possible unwanted EGR flow as possibilities?
IAC valves usually cause idle speed problems, either too high or too low, not rough idle symptoms.
Also when I said "rough idle" I think that the engine is idling too and is rough from that.
When I cleaned the Iac valve It idled alot better, But not for long.
Now I notice when I drive that I wants to stay around 7-800 rpm idling but jumps betwen that a 500 rpm. Which leaves to belive that it is the Iac thats needs to be repalced.
I replaced the EGR about a year ago. That did not solve the porblem. The vehicle is a 1998 Ford Explorer XLT 4.0 liter. Where is the Iac located? I turned the idle screw to make it Idle faster as I noticed that it did not run as rough while stopped in drive. It is mostly OK while in the N position.
I had a "high idle" situation that cleared up for about 3 weeks by cleaning the IAC- truck had about 60k on it. The high idle returned and I replaced the IAC and it has run fine since(130k now). Cost me $72 I believe. I recall one dealer wanted $95 for the IAC.
It did not have a rough idle issue. The high idle caused me to use the brakes more but it did not run rough.

Thanks for your reply
the Iac on my 02 5.4 is behind the TB on the left side. you have to take the black cover off the top to get to it. It has two 8mm bolts holding it to the TB had one wire harrness on it. Kind of a pain in the a** to get too.
I replaced the iac with a new one and it did not help at all. So I put the Old one that I cleaned back on. My idles around 650 while in drive and in park. I though that while in park it should idle higher... right? Maybe I should just turn my idle screw up a little and see if that hleps. if I did are there negaitve things that can happen??
PILOT10- after cleaning your Iac it took three weeks for it to clear up??
After the IAC was cleaned it worked properly for about 3 weeks. And after 3 weeks it wasn't near as bad as just before it was cleaned but I was more sensitive to the change in driveability. I replaced right away after the high idle started to return as I was tired of running past the limit line at stop signs.
Also there is a little ticking noise coming from the engine compartment toward the middle too pass. side from the cab. Could this be part of the problem? And when the enigne is rough it idles around 650 and almost sounds like it whats to die..not a real smooth sounding idle. I did change the Iac right at autozone and did not noitce a difference returned it and put the old one back on...maybe I did not give it enough time to relearn? When I did clean the old Iac I did noitce that I idled around 800 in park, nice and smooth. and it wants to hold around 800 in park but slowly falls down to 650, kind of jumpee, back and frouth.
The IAC is electronic. When you changed it out, you should of also disconnected your battery for about 10 minutes allowing time for the computer to clear and re-learn the signals it will get from the new part.
You can change parts in the Autozone parking lot? nice...here they have signs up all over the lot that say it is illegal to do that. You get fined by the local cops if they catch you.
I have a 2004 f-150 and it also is having trouble idling it dies but only when the truck gets warm and then it starts right back up. Took to the dealer and they replaced the cam sensor and that did exactly nothing problem still exist anyone please help. Could this be the Iac and where is it located on the Triton Motor
Do you have the 5.4 3v? If so, they do not have an Ivac I believe.
Someone correct me if I am wrong.
Josh
(By the way I no longer have the 02 that I had the problem with, that and about 6 other major things going to hell on it , pick up a new o6, Look at signature)
