i was wondering how a setup like this would work on a 1990 diesel f-250. get rid of the cold air intake and entire airbox and plop one of these k&n xstream assemblies down on top of the throttle body.
(just an example truck)
versus an intake system such as the banks, or a homemade ram air in the grill such as the one dave built for his truck.
since the k&n is completely open and filters air from the top as well, it seems like it would get a lot of air in. since diesels need to breathe as much as possible, i don't know how well it would work.
the ram air setup dave has actually forces air into the engine. I don't know if the setup pictured would have much of an advantage than the stock setup, but I would think that a setup like dave's would be much better.
First, I assume your truck is N/A, in which case if the pictured set up has a ram air scoop on top of the hood, you will get great air flow. You can only hope to achieve positve air pressure at your air inlet at best without a turbo. I built a ram air from behind the grill up to a bigger air scoop and duct to replace the stock intake. Works great for me, I notice more airflow allows my truck to have enough jam to drive around at 60 km/hr at 1200 rpm in 4th gear E4OD. My set up is pictured in my Gallery.
I put the ram air setup in my truck yesterday. It works awesome. This is about the best mod that i have done to my truck (1990 F 250 7.3 diesel N/A) Check out my Gallerey for pics.
well i'd like to build myself a ram air like you and dave have.
i was looking at it today, and i see the sport where you guys built yours at, but how do i get around that radiator bracket? it's right smack in the middle of where i need to be.
any help/advice you could give would be much appreciated! thank you.
Sean, if you went the setup in the pic you will notice a difference in hp but the noise from your intake is very loud...Dave has the best ram cool air Ive seen...I have played with dual ram air intakes with good succes with my 86, but I belive Daves system is better! lol

actually, the reason i was first drawn to that setup was to make my intake as loud as i possibly could. haha.
I looked at your ram intake and I was wondering, did you just replace the stock scoop? All I can see in your pics Dave S is the duct work, is that all there is to it? I don't wanta go cutting at stuff without knowing about it . One more thing, what do you mean by "cutting off the soup bowl"?

unscrew the wing nut on top of your airbox. remove the lid. if you flip the lip unpside down it wouldn look like a state troopers hat. cut it flat with a sawzall.
i cut mine off last night and i honestly think i noticed a difference. i always drive with the needle right on 75 mph, and there is this one overpass i always slow down to about 71mph on it. today it stayed at 75.
it could just be a coincidence but... maybe not. its never happened before.
oh...alright I'll check on it. Thanks Dave S, that is how clean it was when I bought it. I do run it hard and drop my mileage every once in a while but it has stayed relitively clean. btw, I went easy on it and went normal driving last I fueled, I kept a nice 59mph while traveling and needless to say it has 350 miles on one tank
I've just added some more picutres to my gallery to show how my ram air scoop behind the grill forces air to my inlet duct above the battery. This is a simple and very effective way to get more air into the engine without cutting any main components of your truck other than the soup bowl. Didn't cost anthing but some time and fiberglass, scraps of sheet metal and 4" duct. 8 pictures with discriptions total, worth more than any amount of typing will cover.
alright...I found what you are talking about (was looking at wrong part earlier haha). Are there any side effects to cutting it off? Just to make sure I don't screw up, here is a pic of what I've got...
