Well I don't wanta cut it and find it it was something important or anything. Sounds like a good power increase but just wanta check all options first. Kinda goes with the rule "measure twice, cut once"
i'm pretty sure the purpose of it is to dampen the noise. cutting it off makes the air flow better giving it more power, and makes it a little noisier under the hood at the same time.
For what it is worth, the E series engines don't have that mess in their air cleaner.
Sound control an cut the power back is all I can figure.
Serves no benifical purpose in the real world.
Just be careful when you cut it off, you don't want to cut through the lid.
Or stop by a salvage yard and see if you can find the lid off of a van air cleaner housing.

However they do have a much smaller hole in the bottom of the air cleaner sitting on the intake, which in my opinion rules out the soup bowl theory of swirling the air.As said above its for noise reduction.
I just had an idea, has anyone seen those commercials for those things that are supposed to swirl the air inside the intake? I bet you could make your own and get a little power gain out of it...sound possible?

i've heard they were supposed to do quite a bit for 8 cylinders. they're only about $50 reguardless, and according to their policy, if they don't work you can send them back.
WOW!!! Maybe I Should take a pic of my intake and see what you think.......I guess mine has some kind of performance parts. My air cleaner does NOT look like that.......although its more of a HINDERANCE than performance.......mine is like a giant soup bowl....without a top........that collects rain water when it rains.....
Dave7.3 I think those would not work right.
For what it is worth they also have a TAG, or turbo air guide for turbo engines that works exactly the oposite, straightens out the air flow for better performance.
I don't remember right now, but I think they were also in the 50 dollar range.
One swirls for better performance and air flow, one stops the swirl for better performance and air flow.
Make up my mind please.
I know of a few that are designed to swirl the air for performance...but I haven't seen one that straightens it out. The ones that swirl the air look like they can be easily made from a $5 sheet of metal thats why I was wondering about it.
Went to the local salvage yard today, found an air cleaner lid off a 6.9...It looks like it will fit on my 7.3 but I am asking is this the design I am after?
PS- The small valve on the lid is rusted, is this a bad sign and how do I clean it?

that would be what it looks like with the soup bowl cut off.
