battery regulator?

i have a question about this box that was mounted next to my radiator, and is connected to my starter solenoid. it is about 4 inches square and had some kind of condenser unit connected to it. this is a very basic question, but i dont understand what it is. i was told it was a battery regulator or something like that. whenever i try to start my truck it just makes clicking sound as soon as you turn on the key, and if it is not grounded(i had to take it off im replacing my radiator support) it will just click once and not do anything. does this indicate that my battery is bad or what? any info you have would be great, thanks.

battery regulator?

That is called the voltage regulator.
It monitors/senses/dispurses the current coming from the alternator and changes output according to needs of the electrical system.
It should be well grounded.
Disconnect Ground cable from battery >remove the V Reg from fender clean off the back and re-attach.

Your explaination about the clicking was hard to understand.
Are you trying to start the engine and all you hear is a click ?
If so,The starter solenoid is probably doing the clicking, becuase the battery is low and unable to turn the starter over.

Please have a look at the charging system diagram on my Ford Illustration page on my web site.

Access is highlighted below.

battery regulator?

thanks for the help. but i still didnt quite get it. i looked at your diagram, but i couldnt read everything so im still not sure. i made sure the battery was charged, and that the regulator was grounded, but this time it didnt do anything at all. i know for sure it was the regulator that was clicking, but that was when it wasnt gounded. would it make a difference if the solenoid was not grounded?

battery regulator?

The starter solenoid grounds through the attaching bracket.
It must be grounded to work.

The battery MUST be fully charged !!

Try this.

Once everything is attached to ground & the battery is fully charged,
Take a wire from the positive post + of the Battery and touch the other end to the "S" terminal of the solenoid to see if the starter engages.

If that doesn't make the starter engage.
Is it an automatic?
If so ,maybe the neutral safety start switch isn't working.
Try again with the E. Brake on and the trans. in neutral.

battery regulator?

OK just a guess here, but from the description you are looking at the old type of voltage regulator. They contain coils and moving contacts, hence the clicking noises. Like mil1ion said make sure the regulator is grounded, very essential for a good working charging system. Especially for the old type regulators.
If your battery is charging when the truck is running it is fine. However I would suggest getting the newer electronic type at some point. They are a much better regulator and arent very expensive.
Another question, it may just be me but the rest of the posts confused me Does your truck start ok?? Or were you just wondering about the clicking noises?
