My truck has started making a wierd metal on metal kinda noise. I have no idea what it is. It is coming from the front of the motor. One of my buddies thinks that it might be the water pump. I only have 70000 miles. I have heard of the water pumps going out around 100000. What do you think? If it is how hard is it to change it out?
Thanks

I'd make sure it wasn't a tensioner pulley, idler pulley or the belt before I tore it down for a pump change.
If it is the pump....it's no more difficult than any other water pump you may have done, other than the fan clutch which is threaded on very tight. You can rent a fan clutch removal tool that makes that part much easier.
I would pull the belt off and rotate the water pump to see if it is the cause or the pulley. Changing the waterpump is not that hard, like cookie said the fan clutch can be a pain.
I had my water pump go bad, the bearing was getting loose and the weep hole had a slight drip but it neve made a sound, but they can sometimes
If you get a stethesccope from the auto parts store or a long screwdrive you can cup the handle buy your ear, (be very carefull around moving parts) and touch it around the variouse bearings you will be able to hear maybe where the sound is comming from,
I have also had sounds comming from just the belt, replaced belt and it was fixed, 5,000 miles ago...
