difference between e4od and 4r100

What exactly is the difference between a e4od and 4r100 transmissions? I have a e4od repair manual. What will I need to rebuild a 4r100?

I don't know, I just don't like to see a thread with 0 replies on page 3 - trying to bump it up.

Pretty much just the name. The 4r100 is an e40d transmission. The only difference is depending on what year your transmission was made. If you have an E40d repair manual you will be good to go for most everything, you might also want to get a revisions update as that is where the differences will be. I found that I referenced my revisions manual more than the repair manual when I rebuild mine. Some of the parts that have been updated replace obsoleted parts, so depending on what you replace you may have to replace the complimentary part as well.

Check out Suncoast.com and brianstruckshop.com for some more info. If you are going to rebuild it your self, I suggest transgo HD/2 repro kit, Eagle Red alto clutches and Kolene steels. From the research I did, sounded like they are the best, and the top two tranny repair shops mentions frequently here use them as well. I ordered all my stuff together including a triple disc converter for 1200 from transmission exchange. So far I am very happy, didn't realize how much the dang thing slipped prior to the rebuild.

4R100 is an updated E40D. That's all I know at the moment.

Yes it would fit, the only difference is that the 4r100 has some updates from the E4OD, otherwise they are the exact same. The Solenoid connector plug may be a little different on outer housings. Do you have a spare E40D that you want to put in? or just thinking?

I did a E4OD over the winter and the parts kit said 4R100. I haven't had my 4R100 next to it to see if its only the plugs. I have had the valve bodys side by side and that all looks the same. Kind of like a C6 with overdrive and electronics.

It is just the ouside casing or cover to the plug. The actual pin layout of the plug is the same.

Hi everyone I just had a quick question I have a 96 Ford Bronco with a 5.8 liter with a E4od transmission 4x4. My question is a buddy of mine has a 2000 Ford 7.3 powerstroke that I was wondering about swapping out with my 5.8 liter will I have to change the transmission out or will I be able to put it right up to the original transmission.

The 7.3 is a international motor and does not have the same bellhousing as any ford motor. So the tranny from you 5.8 will not work.

I know this thread is ten years old but just to clear up any confusion for the newcomers...

NONE OF THIS IS TRUE.

I have loose E4OD gas and diesel and a diesel 4R100. I am going to build an album. Is there any interest here regarding what it should contain and where it should be posted?

The scope of my intent is what I take this thread to be. "What is the difference" usually starts with "I have this transmission, what is it", or I am looking for a particular transmission, how will I recognize one?

What to do with it after I have it is rather well covered by the existing manuals and valve body kits. I intend to reference a couple of those.

I have built an E4OD and I have a 4R100 to build, soon I hope.

A build thread with pics of the procedures and updated parts can be very helpful and welcome. It can go in the Tech Folder stickied at the top of the page.

PM our mod Sous and pitch the idea.

@raydav You can post it anywhere in our here in the 7.3L PSD sub-forum and I will link it in the 7.3L PSD Tech Folder.

@aawlberninf350 Thank you sir for bringing this to my attention. Even though I am a ZF6 guy, I love to see write-ups and tear-downs on just about any part of these amazing trucks (and vans)... I would love to include a well thought out and detailed 4R100 project for FTE members and visitors alike to refer to and learn from.
