shift lock solenoid

I am in the process of swapping steering columns and am having an issue with the shift lock solenoid. And by issues I mean I am not sure that I ever took one out. Is this possible? I currently have a 92 5L no air bag w/ tilt and am swapping out a 95 tilt w/ air bag. When the new one was taken out they pretty much just cut the wires wherever. I was very careful to take care of my harness so I would be able to do a straight swap.

The wires coming from the harness to the shift lock solenoid are wht/prpl, green and black and I cannot for the life me find the connection point or even any loose wires or the part laying around my "shop". THe only wires in the Haynes manual that have wht/prpl are going to the PSOM/Elec shift ctrl mod. Either I have a terrible memory or am just missing the boat on something. What exactly does the shift lock solenoid do?

btw, I id-ed the solenoid from steve83's site I found from this forum. I am not sure if I can list it but i have the link if anybody needs it.

Thanks in advance.

Never had to deal with any such animal in either my 92 or my 93. It may have come about in 95-96 when the OBD-II system came into use but if you can shift from Park without applying the brake there isn't one (or its not working). The solenoid keeps the vehicle from being able to be shifted out of park unless the brake is applied. As I said, neither my 92 nor my 93 had/have one.

I hope that is the case. Help me out here, this is my first venture into anything to do with shifting... So can your 92 shift out of park w/o brake? If not, what keeps from doing so? What keeps it from shifting while you are driving. Forgive me new-ness in this area...

thanks in advance...

Yep, I can go from Park to any gear without applying the brake. The detents in the column keep it from just slipping from one gear to another while driving. The shift lever has to be pulled towards the back of the wheel to get it to move. They do have a tendency to get loose over time and need to be tightened. This involves a bolt or two down under the bottom of the column. Wiggle the shift lever and you should eb able to see the linkage/bolts in question.

Just got the new column (took awhile), and I see what you mean by the indents. the one question I have is with the shifter. Where it fastens on to the bracket at the bottom of the column I didnt mark where it attached. There is a little ball looking thing and I think that goes behind it, but I dont remember and its dark and tight in there... any insight? If anybody else reads this if you could take a look at yours it would save me... You would be looking where the shifter cable attaches to the bracket right by the brake. Thanks in advance...
