Went junk yard shopping again and found a painted white steel grill but I don't know what year it is. I can tell the difference between '69 and '72 but don't know the earlier ones. I don't need this grill because my trucks are '70 - '72. Is there a difference between the two years or are they the same? I thought if I picked it up someone could use it. Once I can determine what year it is and see if there is an interest for it I'll list it for sale (cheap!) I also picked up a radiator core support in good condition (surface rust only) and will list that also.
I'm pretty sure that the base models from 67-69 all used the same painted steel grille. There were differences in the bright aluminum grilles found on the Custom Cab and Ranger models. I know that any differences that may exist in the painted steel grilles are very minor, and they interchange just fine.
Actually, they were not the same from year to year.
1967: four horizontal bars between the top and bottom bars
1968: three horizontal bars with four pairs of floating bars above and below the center bar
1969: same as 1968 except the black was removed from the verticals
1970: divided grill and wrap-around parking lights
1971: divided grill with horizontal bar through center and two thin vertical bars dividing each grill side into six rectangles.
1972: divided grill with horizontal bar through center and one thin vertical bar dividing each grill side into four rectangles
Use the wrong grill and any hard-core (and a show judge) will spot it in an instant.
About the only thing to add here is that the 69 had a kind of depression on the middle horizontal bar that was painted red if the truck was a Ranger. The ivory painted steel grills were identical to each year's (67-9) aluminum grill.
Thanks to those that responded. I will have to go back and take a real good look. I think that it would be very helpfull to people that visit this site to be able to see a picture of the various grills. I would volunteer to take a picture of a '70 and a '72 grill. Where could they be listed? The Tech articles? Any other volunteers?
Good idea John. I have visited this site so long that I have no excuse not to sign up for FTE. I also need to get my gallery up. Thanks for getting the ball rolling!
