Two things got me to thinkin' about this issue; my own milestone of hitting the 1000 mark (big woop, eh Mil1ion? ), and a post in lenny1carl's "400th post" thread:

Well, does it? Does it mean anything?
Did you (or do you) as a newbie have the feeling of unworthyness here at first?......conversely, do you as a 'seasoned' veteran feel a certain amount of confidence with your place here at FTE, and believe a bit of posting lattitude is given you because of it?
When directing a post to another user, do you take his 'post count' into consideration as to how you will respond?........is there a certain amount of 'given' respect that goes along with an elevated post count?
Nah... i don´t give any importance to my, or anyone´s post count, still it´s nice to see it going up, but i only give the answer that i feel appropiated to the issue in dicussion, or the question asked, regardless of whom posted it. But when i start to know the people my anwers might get more friendly, or i might explain myself less if i know that person can get the point easily without too much/many information.
High post count means I spend waaaaayyyy to much time on here. Does it mean anything when I read a persons post? not usually, although there are times. If a person comes in with very few posts and starts putting up bogus information I will tend to hammer on them a little more than a person that has been around for awhile (usually because I can look back through other posts and see if the person is just gotten some bad info or is a typically bad poster but you can't do that with a person that only had a couple of posts) Another time it matters is someone coming in with 3 posts making derogatory statements about Fords, I figure it's a troll, but if a person with several hundered or more posts makes a derogatory statement I look to see what has happened to make them feel that way.
Does it matter no. Its a hobby, a fun thing to do be on here and talk in these forums! Its liek playing slowpitch, your wins and losses dont count for anything, jsut fun to do!
I remember at first being concious (sp) of the fact that I only had a few post but then once I had 20 or so under my belt it didn't bother me anymore.
I do remember making a few replies that didn't really add anything of substance to the topic but it got my post count up to the next level.
What can I say, my vanity got the best of me.

Okay - now, what I think happens is that people ( I know I did) look around at all the old timers on the place, and think: "Geez, how can I make a name for myself? I ain't nobody here. I don't even know how this place works..."
There are all kinds of people online, we've seen that. People who expect to be taken as the absolute everything and answer to all thoughts, and at the other end is "I don't know how to do (something), can you please help me?"
And everything in between...
It's a lot like testing the swimming pool with your toe....
Some dive right in, and hope they get used to the water.
Some are obnoxious, until the lifeguard tells them to chill out...
Some try a little bit at a time, because it's cold at first.
Some have been in pools before, and realise it's a bit shockey at first.
And some just tan in the chairs off to the side...
It strikes people in many ways, depending on their own backgrounds and where they have been online before.
Encho is right - "Es no importa..."
You get in the pool, and if you swim or not - the water feels good.
It may seem a strange way to put it, but I think it is true.
After a while it all looks just like your best friends driveway.
In my imagination I can see Ken Payne tweaking in a distributor tonight - watching the strobe on the balancer wheel. Cussing, because it doesn't seem quite right by the sound of the engine.
Can you see me in your minds eye cussing because I just burned my fingers soldering something together?
It's just like that...
We are all wrench benders. This is our "virtual" garage!

in the grand scheme of things it means nothing. it just a small unimportant # that i didn't pay attention to until i saw greywolfs 10k thread. i know a few of mine have been pure rubbish. some have been fine and a few have been brilliant (imho, lol). greywolfs almost always seem insightfull, which says alot if you can do that 10k times. mind you i haven't read all 10k. just kidding grey. all i'm saying is it was kind of like the small guy who strikes out all the time, getting a double, when everyone around him on the team was hitting home runs. it was just fun when i hadn't had any lately. it distracted me from the situation here at home. important, no. kind of fun though. yeah i'm easily amused.
no i dont take any liberties 'cause i have moore than a jr user. i know i can get booted as fast as anyone. as a matter of fact i've asked mods to erase threads i started as they had seved out their usefullness, or regreted them and was quickly accomodated by the way

greywolf summed it up pretty good. As far as it determining how much you know, or your worth here: not even close. I'm still an idiot by most auto-buff's standards. I've never taken an engine apart and rebuilt. I've never replaced a rusted out gas tank. I bought a truck that is reliable, and I can bolt something off and bolt something new back on. Post count determines how much time you waste here, and how comfortable you are with the personel, and in that aspect, I belive it matters: some.
It definitely means different things to different people. Some folks seem to just post a little every now and again, I've seen folks I thought were newbies by their post counts and then I look at their join date and see they've been here longer than I have.
And then there are those to whom post count seems to mean everything. You see some with outrageously high post counts but if you look at their past posts you see many with very little actual content, often just a few words of reply or agreement to a post and sometimes tons of posts that simpy repeat what others have already said, sometimes word-for-word. It's like, "It doesn't matter what I say, just as long as I say something to increase that post count."
I think these folks use copy-and-paste a lot...!
These folks probably watch that post count number increase with every post, while others of us often forget the thing is even there and are startled to see the number climb every once in awhile.
But I also see many, many folks on here who have high post counts and so many of their posts offer good advice and thoughtful words of wisdom. And others with low post counts who do the same, and leave me wishing they would post more...
And a high post count can indeed lend an air of credibility to the poster's statements. But you have to read a few more posts by that person to decide for yourself if they really do seem to know what they're talking about, or if they're just full of it and like to talk a lot. (Kinda like me... )

As I move slowly into the sunset ...Post counts don't really mean anything .
IMO, The Content of any Post is what's most important.
I hope for respect from fello FTE'rs knowing that I care about so many things
Except for telling jokes.... I have only used post counts as a fair way to give things away at my expense.
Misinformation ? I have no problem in coming back to a post and apologizing and beat myself up for doing it un-intentionally , (Damn brain farts)
As far as the correlation between posts and time on FTE.
I think post count can have an effect on FTE web site Related information.
Experience is the best resource.
My post count has to do with 2 things :
1) Always wanting to help and inform people.
2) I spent 3 years as an FTE administrator and was always on the site.
Side note:
It would be higher if I never edited posts or had a couple of thousand purged from the system or let the ones I deleted outright because they were duplicates.
If you are kind of interested to find out about people when they first came to FTE,
Click their user name and then the posts they have made, then go the last page to see their early posts and what they did on FTE
I hope I have cleared up your thoughts on me and the HPC.?
I keep a close eye on my post count so I know that when I get my "post bonus" I can audit my account and make sure they don't short me on any of my well deserved rewards.
