I get an impediment every once in a while, usually swapping the last sound of one word with the last sound of the next word. Drives me nuts, as it takes me 3 or 4 times to get it out properly. I think I even did it in my best man speech at my buddy's wedding last year.
I used to work with a guy who stuttered. Sometimes he would make jokes about it, like when he's speaking clearly, and I didn't quite hear him. I ask "could you repeat that?" He'll say "What, did I stutter?" But when he did stutter, his whole face would almost go into convulsions, trying to get it out. His eyes would roll into the back of his head, and his head would **** like a dog's would. Not pretty.
I don't know if waiting for the end, or interrupting with the word is helpful or not, but I figured it was more polite to wait.
They don't need help with words, they need a person's patience.
bigrigfixer, that's the word (convulsions) I was trying to find.
That article about the extreme stutterers had them convulsing so bad that some were pulling out their hair, or convulsing on the floor. Muscles were so tense. Not a pretty site.

I stutter. It comes and it goes like what Octane said. It's interesting from the standpoint you never know when I will stutter. Which makes it that much more annoying.
I married well though, my wife is a speech pathologist.
I married a psychiatrist...guess that explains a lot...
Yup, dont help them out by saying the word you think they are trying to say. They arent morons, its just that their body cant say the words correctly all the time.
Ive also noticed that I dont stutter when I sing or swear. I guess I need to swear more, eh? LOL
I pretty much grew out of my stuttering problem, but as I said it does pop up from time to time.
It doesnt happen when Im nervous, it just kinda pops up randomly.
Saw a show where someone had a bad stutter problem. He invented a walkman type device that allows you to listen to yourself speak. He showed video of him before and after... seemed to work wonders.
I think most are related to nerviousness.
Saw a show about abused kids and the results, some of them showed in speaking problems. It was actually kinda sad.
I think the lisp is somewhat a physical thing, something about size of tonge or shape of inside mouth parts.
