Speech Impediments

What's your take on the cause?

Know anyone who has an speech impediment?

Some of the people who either have or had it is a who's who list of personalities.

On the extreme end, it's very tramatic. I didn't realize how much untill I read an article on it.

They did a TV segment on it awhile back with John Stossel.

Interesting.

I don't know what causes it. My little sister used to have one but after some speech therapy it got all straightened out. Of course we STILL tease her about it.

I always got a kick out of the story of James Earl Jones who used to stutter horibly, to the point that he was riddiculed by his school teachers for it. Now the guys voice is being used everywhere. "La la la la luuuuuuuuke, I am your f f f f f father!"

What frusterates me is seeing news reporters with a lisp or other speach impediment. It drives me nuts! How do these people get jobs speaking . . . on television???????

Sorry I missed it- but this could be a fascinating thread. One of the side-effects of our daughter's Autism is a pronounced speech impediment. She has a real good attitude about herself and the world around her- but it is an issue for a lot of kids. Fairly common to.

I agree. The only thing i can figure is that they can't get rid of them, because that is discrimination. And that is wrong, and politically incorrect. We have to be nice to them, so we dont hurt their feelings...what a bunch of BS. That probably sounds cold, but its like a football player born without arms...may not be his fault, but, they just won't be cut out for football.

My mother was a speech therapist, recently retired. I do know that they are incredibly common. Odds are good that every class in every school has at least one child with some form of speech impediment. Some of them just seem to go away by themselves (the kids learn to speak correctly) and some of them can be treated by professionals.

I also agree that TV and Radio announcers need to have clear speech. Just like Pilots need good vision. That's not discrimination, that's good sense.

I have no idea... I think most people grow out of those sort of things. I really can't understand at all how people have a lisp. I mean, we all have mouths with teeth, so I can't wrap my mind around how you can not learn to properly make an 's' sound. Explanations? Is it entirely mental?

Ive had a stuttering problems for most of my life. Ive pretty well go it under control now, but I sometimes struggle with words that have hard sounds. Words that start with "t" seem to give me the most trouble.
Its not a major problem and it certainly doesnt stop me from talking to people I dont know, but its still something that I have to deal with on a daily basis.
Its weird because I have no problems approaching a woman in a bar, talking to someone I dont know very well or even giving a speech, but its something that still pops up in normal conversation from time to time.
Oh well, we've all got our crosses to bear I suppose. This is mine.

Google famous people who stutterd and you'll be surprise.

Some of who I wouldn't even dare make fun of; not that I would with anyone.

I stutter. It comes and it goes like what Octane said. It's interesting from the standpoint you never know when I will stutter. Which makes it that much more annoying.

I married well though, my wife is a speech pathologist.

Strange how stutterers don't when they sing.

Look at Mel Tillis. A good country singer.

Some movies have scenes where stuttering is part of the dialog.
