Get out from underneath your truck, it’s in the cab. Look on the topside of the steering column just before it goes through the firewall. It’s a combination reverse light/neutral safety switch.

Post need help to pass inspection

If it's a three speed, the switch is clamped on to the bottom end of the column above the steering box. I think the switch for the four speed is up near the top of the trans.

i had the same problem when trying to pass inspection. The first guy i went to failed it for over 20 things... theres a post aobut it on here. then i scraped the failed inspection sticker off and took it to a family friend shop. He passed it fine and made my roof lights work! The real problem is finding the right shop.

Woops, guess I assumed too much.

Mk has got you covered, the back-up light switch for the 4-speeds is located near the top behind the shifter on the driver's side.

Did you get your reverse light switch fixed and a new inspection sticker? If not, you can simply wire up a toggle switch on the dash for the reverse lights. That will pass most places in Texas, too. If the city shops are a b***h, you can always cruise out to a small town where there are a lot of old trucks and a tractor dealership. Most stations there will do a REAL inspection. Trouble with some shops is the inspectors are too young. I always had trouble getting my 68 inspected til I figured out that the inspector should be at least as old as your truck. After that, no problems.

Bravo !, Very well said. I took my 70 to one of those fast
lube places to get the inspect done. The inspector was
about 19yrs old. He was all over the truck for 20mins,
then wanted to know if I knew where the connection was
for the computer! I told him I had removed it, he went
tearing inside to get his boss, so I drove away.
Next place the owner had a 63 Galaxie XL, real cherry,
I was in and out in 20mins.

My back-up lights haven't workedfor the past 5 years and have never been required for a safety inspection (Ft. Worth, TX). Some "newby" inspectors don't know what they are doing most of the time.

Back up lights ARE required in TX. I'm a licensed state inspector currently. But as in any job, it's all about who you deal with and how they do there job. Some people are more leniant and some more strict. Technically whenever someone in TX gets an inspection and fails they still have to pay for the inspection. Try telling a customer they failed inspection but they still have to pay, doesn't fly to well. So that's one rule I definitely let fly.

I hope I don't offend anyone, but there is a correction to be made. In response to jdbanks- I thought I might be wrong about the reverse lights not being required when you posted that they are. So I went to the Texas Dept. of Public Safety web sight to double check. After all, I do like to obtain my inspection sticker fair and square- it's for my safety as well as the safety of others. It also helps to be informed because some garages will try to tell you something is required that isn't working just to try to make a few extra bucks on the repair.

Items of Inspection

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
05.02 Inspect Every Pickup, Panel, or Truck Under 80 Inches Wide For: (Listed in suggested order of inspection)

* Check for evidence of Financial Responsibility

1. Horn
2. Windshield Wipers
3. Mirror
4. Steering
5. Seat Belts
6. Brakes (system) Parking - (beginning with 1960 models)
7. Tires
8. Wheel Assembly
9. Safety Guards or Flaps (if four tires or more on rearmost axle)
10. Exhaust System
11. Exhaust Emission System (beginning with 1968 models)
12. Beam Indicator (beginning with 1948 models)
13. Tail Lamps (2); (1) if 1959 model or earlier
14. Stop Lamps (2); (1) if 1959 model or earlier
15. License Plate Lamp (1)
16. Rear Red Reflectors (2)
17. Turn Signal Lamps (beginning with 1960 models) (mea-sure if 1959 model or earlier)
18. Head Lamps (2)
19. Motor, Serial, or Vehicle Identification Number
20. 1988 & newer - inspect for window tinting or coating
21. Gas caps on vehicles 2-24 model years old.

You can go to the link-

http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/vi/inspection/veh_class_list.asp?class=Pickup%2C+Panel%2C+or+Tru ck+Under+80%22&classsubmit=Go

and see it for yourself.

I survived three DPS area supervisors in the early '90's when I was inspecting due to them being crooked or misinformed themselves. If anyone has ANY questions about their inspection information, the best thing to do is go straight to the source- YOUR LOCAL DEPT OF PUBLIC SAFETY.

As far as customers paying for the inspection when they fail, I just calmly explained to them that they were paying for the labor it takes to do the inspection, not the sticker. That is not stretching the truth- IT IS THE TRUTH. The sticker is just the prize at the end of the race.
