Turn signal problem

Hey all,
I've got a turn signal/brake light not working. pretty sure it's the switch. if the turn signal arm isn't in a perfect spot my brake lights don't work. My question is--is there anyway to wire either the brake lights seperately so they don't run through the turn signal switch, or run the turn signals through a toggle switch on the dash, or will that overload the rear lights? also, I know i should just replace the turn signal switch, but no money to buy a new one.
thanks everybody
david

Turn signal problem

First off,you will have to go to a yard to hopefully find a good one. There is no new signal switch for '67-72's.Second they are a bear to put in.Also they make a tool to push the terminals out of the plug.

Now,For a bypass on the brake lights,Just take one side of the two wires going into brake switch and get a fuse tap, plug that wire you choose into a key off fuse. There's some brake lights for ya.

Now try this(worked many a time for me)Take steering wheel off, take a fat punch that is fat and flat,no bigger that the rivit holding the turn signal cam to switch and "peen" it severel times. Then check your light,no go then hit harder! If any of you think i am crazy,I have gotten 5 years from a "bad" switch by making the rivet tighter so the contacts meet. That is ussually the problem anyway.Just good ol fashion wear.I have done this to three trucks and in my young life none of them ever screwed up again~

>Just take one side of the two wires going into brake switch

EDIT ,myself. The wire(both red)that come out of the taped up fat band of wires, the one from fuse box, that is the one you want to tap into the the fuse box to make your own power. The other one goes to the TS switch.

The brake light and turn signal are on the same element in the bulb. The other element is the taillights. As for keeping the signal if you tapped the brake power somewhere else,I cant remember if they will still work.I got wasted last night so i cant really think right now.

Turn signal problem

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 12-May-02 AT 01:09 PM (EST)]There is no way I can think of to have both the brakes and turn signals work without either complex wiring or a working turn switch.

You might want to read the technical article I wrote on this web site, it explains in great detail the workings of the turn signal switch on your model truck (I did the repair on a 70 F-100.)

It is a bit time consuming to replace the switch, but not impossible, and yes, you can buy a new one. I got mine from Dennis Carpenter, it may be available on this web site as well.

Your welcome. It is not a permanent fix on any given truck i suppose, but me for never had another problem.I alrealy plan on my current(rivet smacked truck)if it quits again,I'll just get a bigger hammerThis truck has along time on that trick!https://www.ford-trucks.com/user_gallery/sizeimage.php?&photoid=2973&.jpg

For you "correct" guys,I have three or four columns with maybe?good switches, but those are a reserve

Jason, that's awesome. Great tip. It's exactly that kind of wisdom that makes this board great.

When I bought my '69, the turn signals didn't work and I traced it to the switch. I spent $50 on a NOS switch and several hours swapping it in. I wish I'd had your tip then.

i didnt need the switch (spare) i just took apart the union that the turnsignal switch wires plug into.i cleaned the little studs with a pocketknife and put it back together and all the rear lights worked.
