new carb or rebuild kit?

i have an 85 with 351ho and the carb is shot. the choke doesn't work and it runs real rich (bad enough that you can smell gas 10 feet away after it's been running). anyway, i've been debating on whether to buy a new carb or just get a rebuild kit for the stocker. some input from you guys would be appreciated. also, would a universal edlebrock fit the stock intake manifold?

I am assuming that your current carb is a 4 bbl. A good rebuild should restore your original carbs performance provided you know what your doing or have someone who does do it for you. If your truck does have a 4 bbl you should be able to purchase a square bore 600-650cfm Edlebrock or Holley with vacuum secondaries an an electronic choke. Be sure to order one with the Ford style linkage. The thing that usually helps me decide is my wallet. I can rebuild a carb for less than $50, but a new carb will probably run you $350 or more depending on what you want. Good luck.
