Carburetor indecision... would love your input.

I have an 86 F250 Lariat 4x4 with a 351w topped with a Carter 9605s Competition series carb.

I'd like your opinion on whether I should:

1. Rebuild this carb... Is it a decent carb worth the time to rebuild?
.... rebuild kit, plus carb soak, and other necessities - $75-$100

2. Pay $130 to have it rebuilt, tuned and tested.

2. Replace this carb with say a brand new Summit M2008 Carb - (SUM-M08600VS) $289.

She just recently got new plugs, wires, rotor, distributor etc. however she idles really rough when stopped in gear, and doesn't seem to have the power that she should. That being said, she was a daily driver.

I know it could be other issues as well, however from the looks of the carb it's been a long time since it's been put into service!

I think that I really need to take her in to get the timing checked as the previous owner told me that he "just eyeballed it".

SUM-M08600VS I have on a 302 in a first generation RX7 I'm building. It's a good carb and does the trick but the fuel fittings have to be tightened really tight or they will leak.

I can't be of much assistance as for the two options you are faced with. I just wanted to let you know about the fuel fittings on that particular carb.

I would start with timing and a tuneup you already know they need attention. Then worry about a carb or not depending on how it is doing.

The Carter 9605 is a 600 CFM AFB - basically the Eddy 1405. That is a very good carb and should provide good performance on a 351W. I have its brother, the Eddy 1406, on Rusy's 351M and it does a great job. Those are set-and-forget carbs needing very little maintenance, so I agree with Iseriad - do your tuneup and set the timing and then see if you need to address the carb.

If you do, the $75 - 100 figure is high for a DIY rebuild. But, not bad for a professional.

Out of curiosity, is your truck computer controlled? If its not converted, I would imagine, swapping out would cause some problems

from my limited knowledge (in the difference), I believe first step is to see which ignition module you have, the DSII version (pre-computer) has a blue cap/plug where the two plugs go into the ignition module (fender mounted) , and I believe the 84-86's have a green one, also what does your dizzy look like? Does it have a vac advance mounted on it? and only a couple wires to a plug? I know I got a few things screwed up in this but the wizards will be along shortly.

This is where it should be blue for DSII and green??? for the next version

Good. You don't have a computer running anything. It may still be there, but it isn't managing the ignition system.

I use the 1406 with 351w HO. Works very well. I would recommend a fuel pressure regulator, a heat dissipating carb spacer, kit for Ford linkage and you will probable need to fabricate a kickdown piece to make the transmission kickdown work right.

I am not a mechanic and was able to easily take the carb apart, clean, rebuild with instructions found in the rebuild kit and reading online.

1406 does not seem to like fuel pressure above I think 6.5 or so.

1406 tends to periculate fuel on hot summer days so carb spacer helps.

Do NOT-I repeat Do not get a Mr. Gasket from a regular parts store, you might as well shred 16 bucks and save time installing it only to have it fail within a month.
