A few years ago I was on a "I gotta buy a bike" kick and I got over it mainly because my wife was on a "but we can't afford a bike and buy groceries" kick.
While on this kick I was very intrigued by the Royal Enfield "Built Like a Gun". I went as far as driving to Goshen Indiana to look at them. I really liked the looks of them, but didn't buy one. The fact that you're looking at them tells me you're either interested in purchasing something that is relatively inexpensive, or something that has all the style of a great bike from the 1950's, or maybe a little of both. Hopefully someone will post that has more relevant experience with them.
I thought they were pretty cool. Which model are you looking at?
I like the olive drab of the Military but I think they are all pretty cool. Especially with the side car. And you're right, I want something that is inexpensive and very retro and since the Enfield is pratically the same now as it was during WWII, it really caught my eye.
No real info here, sorry. But one of my greatest regrets is that when I was in Sri Lanka in 1995 I didn't take the time to go to India and buy one for a trek. Seems there were/are travellers who buy them up north, and ride them south. You'd buy it used at $500, and ride up to Nepal, and sell it to someone coming back south.
I was told that the Indians had the factory shipped over and what you were buying was a "new" but identical 1950 something Royal Enfield Bullet. They make a diesel too, I heard.
So little time, so little time...
You younger FTE'rs, get off your butts or ut from under your truck and go travelling and learn how to stay with the locals and not in hotels...you'll never regret it, or forget it, and you'll make smarter decisions when you vote for President...nuff said.
