Transmission Advice
The truck is a '97 F350 4:10 LS Auto w/ overdrive
1. Can you reccommend an after-market tranny cooler
2. Trans temp guages? Brand / Supplier
3. What is the ideal temperature for these trannys to run under load to prevent pre-mature wear? In other words what is the temp threshold to try and stay under?
Thanks in advance for your time and efforts with my Ford education.
Tru Cool or Hayden make good aftermarket coolers and I believe Hayden makes the factory external coolers that come with the towing package option. Looking at how your truck is equipted, I would guess that you have the factory external as well as the standard internal in the radiator. If you aren't towing real heavy, that combination should be adiquite. On a '97 (high miles), you may want to flush out the cooler / coolers though.
Tru Cool is offering a model without the cooler by pass valve for your truck because the trans has one already. Do a search on Tru Cool.
I like Auto Meter gauges. Check our site sponsers or searce the web for many suppliers. There are others available from VDO etc. Here is a link to a picture of where the sender goes in the transmission.

Around 160 is normal operating temp.

I also have Autometer gauges and mine rarely goes over 150* light, and I've never seen over 180* under any conditions. I've read where anything approaching/over 220* is dangerous to the health and well being of the trans.
Hope this helps.
